tfpl blog: Enterprise Risk Management Meeting- September

I recently attended the September ERM meeting; speakers were John Summers, Chief Risk Adviser at Rio Tinto and Neil Allen, Director at Systemic Consult Ltd, the discussion was about the connectivity between different risks within the same company and how they can affect each other; it was discussed that the need to understand how risks are connected and how many connections a risk has is essential in helping identify the key risk areas within a business; the strength of the connection also has to be taken in to account representing the likelihood of the risk coming to fruition and having an effect.

In conclusion I feel that the analysis of risk connections is a very usefully tool to aid the Risk Manager in identifying key risk areas that may previously have been seen as low risk on their own could have a large number of connections that could cause a domino effect throughout other areas of the company.

Blokhin returns to Dynamo Kiev as coach

Kiev, Sep 26

Oleg Blokhin was appointed coach of Dynamo Kiev football club, returning to the club where he became one of the world?s top strikers in the 1970s and 1980s.

The move Tuesday opens a vacancy with the Ukraine national team, which Blokhin will leave after seeing the team through its final two World Cup qualifiers of the year, against Moldova and Montenegro next month.

?Renowned Dynamo football player and Ukraine national team coach Oleg Blokhin has been named as the head coach of FC Dynamo Kiev,? the club said in a website statement.

Dynamo suggested that Blokhin would only start work at the club after Ukraine?s game with Montenegro Oct 16.

?After this the coach will be able to focus on his club work,? Dynamo said.

Blokhin has signed a four-year deal and will meet the team Wednesday, the club said.

Despite Blokhin?s legendary status in Ukrainian football, the Dynamo job is the first time he has coached a domestic club side in the country.

Blokhin holds the records for most appearances and most goals in the Soviet league, scoring 211 times in 436 games, and won 112 caps for the Soviet Union.

Since retiring as a player in 1990, he has spent most of his time coaching in Greece, with a brief spell in the Russian league.

He coached the Ukrainian national team between 2003 and 2007 before returning last year to guide his country through their first home tournament, Euro 2012.

In his last match, Ukraine drew 1-1 with England at Wembley in a World Cup qualifier.

Google Maps on web and Android adds bus routing for Japan, guides teddy bears quickly video

Virtually anyone who's been to a Japanese city knows that subways and trains might be closely associated with their country, but also that they only form a part of the mass transit picture. With that in mind, Google has quietly rolled out an update to Google Maps data for Android and the web that supports bus navigation in Japan, including schedules. It's a simple addition, but an important one for those who can't always get to where they're going on rails -- like teddy bears, according to Google's video. We just want to know who makes that kawaii case for the Galaxy Nexus.

Oh Canada! Why Are You So Hard on Netflix?

There has been a lot of news about Netflix and Canada recently, including some bizarre quotes from a Netflix executive, so journalist Peter Nowak is with us to explain and expound upon the backstory of what's turned into a pretty entertaining and pretty important story north of the border. First off, let me ask you about some interesting quotes that I just mentioned from the Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

89% Robot & Frank

Question: Have you ever seen a concept for a movie or plotline and think, "That's not really going work or be any good."? I will admit I think that all the time. Yes, even me, the least critical movie critic! Oh, I hate that term - sends shivers down my spine. I prefer movie reviewer... Anyway... Every story in a film has the potential to be a great one or go burning down in flames. It's true. There is always a chance, but when you hire the right people, who know what they are doing, the percentage of achieving greatness increases. Robot & Frank, an indie film I just saw in the theatre, proved if you hire the right actor even a silly concept as man having a robot caretaker who helps him....well, now I can't tell you what the robot helps with or it would ruin it. But I can say Frank Langella pulled off one of the best acting jobs I have seen in a while. He's a character that you aren't supposed to like but end up caring about. Not an easy task. Brilliant! Bottom line: I absolutely adored Robot & Frank. The story takes place in a not so distant future and technology has advanced and was fully integrated into daily life. However, the filmmakers made the advancements just enough to keep it very realistic. Like it could only be 20 years off from where we are now, or closer. Frank, the main character, is played by Frank Langella, an older man, living alone and we found out his memory is unstable. His family has concerns and gets him a robot caretaker. Robot's voice is spoken by Peter Sarrsgaard, another reason this film worked. The actor's delivery of the Robot's voice was perfectly portrayed: dead-pan but softly spoken. For a good portion of the film I couldn't figure out who the voice belonged to; and it reminded me of Kevin Spacey's robot/computer portrayal in Moon (My very first review), but the delivery wasn't over the top mechanical so the vocals had given a kindness to the robot's demeanor. There are a few other actors in Robot & Frank that I believe most will recognize: Susan Sarandon, Liv Tyler, Jeremy Sisto and James Marsden. Each of them brought a respectable addition to the story without over-shadowing the story or the main characters. There was definitely a balance played by Liv Tyler and James Marsden where technology was either fully accepted or seen as an issue too many rely on. One point this film tried to make, or at least that is how I interpreted: technology can take over so much that certain aspects of daily life become nearly obsolete. All I will say: How do you feel about ebooks? And I will let you decide what lesson there is to learn in Robot & Frank. I have a predication that Frank Langella will be nominated for numerous awards for this performance: Golden Globes, Independent Spirit Award and possibly even an Oscar. Yes, he was that good and helped make this film worth the watch. Well done! Directed by Jake Schreier, Stage 6, 2012 Written by Christopher D. Ford Starring: Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, James Marsden, Live Tyler, Jeremy Sisto, and Peter Sarsgaard. Genre: Comedy, Drama, Sci-Fi My favorite part: Honestly, the ending. I got a bit choked up. My least favorite part: Can't really pinpoint anything now. Rating: PG-13 Length: 89 minutes Review: 9 out of 10

Hello World! | U*Reka

Under the roof

According to Simon Cozens,??Hello World!??is the ?traditional incantation to the programming gods to help you learn the (programming) language better?.[1]?I have been trying?to learn programming for quite?a long time, but never had the chance to write my first ?Hello World? programme.

So, why would I, or someone with an architectural background want to learn programming? The reason is simple. It is a trend, and also?a response to a need. Technology affects our lifestyles, and?even the way we design. With the?advent of?the Internet, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Building Information Modeling (BIM), as well as parametric design, the skill sets of the architects nowadays are very different compared to a few decades ago.?If we think of computers as?our best design assistants these days,?we should use them?to?do what they are best at ??performing spontaneous repetitive calculations and storing huge amounts of information.

A designer?s imagination has no boundaries, but the most common limitation he may face?is the tools he uses. Computers have limits,?so we have to push those limits. Today?s computers are much more powerful than ten years ago, yet they are still unable to accomplish?certain tasks that we humans can think of. Rather than waiting for the super computers of the future to arrive, I believe it is time to?make a paradigm shift in terms of?design thinking, methodology, and even?our working relationship?with the computers, so that we can still achieve something great within current technological limitations.

People often refer to the computing industry as ?Information Technology?, or ?IT? in short. Exchanging information is communication. Although?it may appear?that the only communication happens between human end-users,?computers are involved in the process as well -?they are the agents of their respective end-users, translating between human input and matrices of ?0?s &?1?s.

If we want to make sure that computers?perform their duties properly, then we need to communicate with computers in languages?that they can interpret and understand. Most of the time, this communication is carried out in the form of a programme, or a script in my case.

In this article, I would like to share my experience with my Master Thesis project at NUS -?both the sweet and bitter memories about design with procedural rule-based modelling.

Suzhou: Aerial View

My thesis design scheme was to create a series of floating food markets along the moats surrounding the ancient city of Suzhou, in preparation for the global energy-descent future. I started with the premise that Inland Water Transport (IWT)?would be?a more energy-efficient alternative to the predominant?motorway transport. Suzhou, the city also known as ?the Venice of the Orient?, was chosen to host the project site,?because 42% of the city is covered by water, with 24km of navigable canals in the urban districts. Using the food market network as an architectural intervention,?my thesis aimed to remedy the broken relationship between the waterways and the residents in Suzhou. It also attempted to address?local issues regarding food safety and food prices.

The project embarked from the current post-peak oil global situation. Global oil consumption patterns have indicated that, almost half of the annual oil consumption is related to transportation. It follows that if we could?change?the way that we move people and goods around the world, a new low energy footprint lifestyle would result, which would ease the worrying energy future scenario by a significant extent.

The next question was: Can the scenario be improved via any architectural means in the near future, say 2030? Where to start?? Being one of the fastest developing economies in the world, the energy demand?in China is?obviously high. China ranks second in terms of oil consumption, immediately after the USA.

As a 2nd tier city, Suzhou has?a fast-developing economy?and more flexibility to be shaped, compared to 1st?tier cities like Shanghai, Beijing, and Shenzhen. In?my design scheme, there are eight floating markets in total, located along the moats surrounding the ancient Suzhou city, immediately outside the downtown area. All the markets are located at the intersections between the public transport routes and waterways, and are connected via riverfront walkways.

A procedural rule-based design workflow?was adopted both?at the urban scale and at the building level.

The Waterborne Suzhou

Location of Suzhou, Jiangsu, China

Built in 514 B.C., ancient Suzhou city had already developed an extensive canal system a long time ago. These canals?have been?well maintained, added, joined, and extended over the subsequent?25 centuries, and they remain remarkably well maintained today,?despite the fact that?they are seldom?used. The canals reach almost every corner of the city, from the downtown old streets, to the farms and agricultural land at the outskirts of the city.

Suzhou (Downtown) Canal Network in 2000

The Eight Markets

Overview of the 8 Sites

There are?eight markets in total. All the?eight locations were chosen based on the same set of requirements:

  1. There must be three main lines, namely the river (blue), the parallel road (red), and the flyover bridge (black) connecting the downtown Suzhou and outer districts.
  2. The market locations cannot be too close to one another, to?ensure the efficiency of the market distribution and coverage.
  3. The passengers will approach the markets via public transport on land;?the food will be delivered by boats via the canals to the markets.

Rules for Walkway/Market Platform

Walkway Modelling Rules

Taking the loop of the moats as the starting line, the two banks of the canal give the first?two curves.

  1. A third curve is the nearest road, adjacent to the outer bank of the canal.
  2. The centre line is divided into 1982 segments, 8 meters apart (8m is considered to be the ?suitable column span, important for the modeling of market roof later)
  3. Two different types of event nodes are assigned (Market v.s. River Branch)
  4. The platform section will always be represented by a line formed by 24 points. The arrangement of the points will vary according to the FOUR different scenarios of event permutation along the waterway.

[A] River Branch Event: The platform will be raised at a level of +4.5m above the annual water level, to allow boats to enter and leave the ring of canal.

[B] Market Event: An additional platform will be generated from the 5th staircase step, form a parabolic shape for the market space, allowing trade to take place.

Platform Variants

Rules for Market Roof (5 lines)

All heights in the chart are measured from the annual average water level. The roof structure covers the 180m range from the market location. The distance from?the location?point, X, is the control parameter which affects the roof profile.

Acoustic Barrier Tip varies according to the (1) height of nearest road, and (2) distance to the nearest road.

Roof Edge is kept almost constant.

Central Roof Ridge has a parabolic increment from 9m to 15m.

The Roof Kink?takes off and starts to catch up with the Central Roof Ridge 40m from the market location. This is to provide a horizontal roof at the joint to the flyover. Pedestrians can thus access the food market not only from the road running parallel?to it, but also directly from the flyover bridge. (Suzhou is a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly city; all major roads have at least 4m wide pedestrian walkways on both sides.)

Site One ? Roof Sectional Profiles

Up to this point, all the above processes?were carried out in Houdini?? a parametric modelling software program developed by SideFX. Despite being a very flexible modelling tool, it could only allow me to model the rough backbone of the structure. After all,?this was a design for the entire urbanscape, and there was a?tremendous?number of elements to be included. Any further detailing of the design would?have a?multiplying effect due to the project scale, and my computer memory would soon?become a bottleneck.

I decided?to export the individual?market models,?in order to?focus on and develop the design on a building scale. To do this,?I had to solve two problems. First,?the inter-operability?between software programmes, i.e., whether the model exported from Houdini could be accepted by the second programme. ?The other problem was how to continue with the same rule-based procedural modelling in the new software. The size of one market is?quite large, and if I were to model each single component, I would miss the submission deadline for sure.

I?found my saviour ? Rhinoceros, a NURBS?modeling software developed by McNeel. With a Rhino plug-in ? Panelling Tools, I could easily solve these two headaches at one shot. ?

To simplify the design language, I adopted 5 types of panel geometries ? quadrilaterals with apertures of various sizes. Horizontal Roof Panels and Acoustic Barrier Panels, are two special cases.

?

Exploded View of Components

?

Rule-based Panelling Technique

The space beneath the roof?would be?poorly lit due to the deep plan, so?I?decided to introduce more natural daylight to the space. A repulsion sphere was placed in the centre of each Horizontal Roof Panel to distort the rectangular grid?so that the panels in the middle?would be?larger. Based on their proximity to the repulsion sphere, panels with larger apertures were located nearer to the middle. The effect of the ?light well? effect can be seen from the renderings. I also wanted to retain the visual connection between the two sides of the Acoustic Barrier. An attraction line was used to represent the average eye level of the pedestrians on the road side, and?panels closer to the attraction line have larger apertures.

Site No. 1

During the last month of my thesis project, I took a gamble to switch my operating system from 32-bit Windows 7 to 64-bit Windows 7. The only intention was to increase the usable computer memory?to more than?4 GB. It was a risky decision, as the compatibility of?some?software is not guaranteed. There were some moments of pure panic, as I tried?to find solutions or alternative methods to various issues that cropped up from online forums.

Eventually I was very pleased to finish the entire production within 3 weeks. Although the limitations of both software and hardware can be deeply frustrating, the benefits of rule-based procedural modelling have been tried and tested and it?is in my opinion, well worth the effort. ?

Does more authority translate into a reduction in stress and anxiety ...

This may come as a surprise, but a growing body of scientific evidence suggests that having more power is associated with less stress and anxiety. Take the?Whitehall studies of health in the British civil service that found a higher governmental rank was strongly correlated with lower mortality rates. Or, consider the work of Stanford biology professor Robert Sapolsky, PhD,?on the influence of social hierarchy on primate health. His measurements of the stress hormone cortisol in baboons showed lower levels of the hormone in high-ranking troop members.

Now new research from Stanford?psychologist James Gross, PhD, and a Harvard team offers more evidence that?higher rank is associated with less anxiety and lower levels of cortisol. In the study, which was published today in?the?Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers examined?both cortisol measurements and self-reported anxiety levels within a group of high-ranking government and military officials who were enrolled in a Harvard executive leadership program.?Study results showed the high-ranking leaders were less stressed according to both measures.

A Stanford news?release explains how researchers teased out specifics from the findings to better understand the relationship between leadership roles and stress level:

The critical element seems to be a sense of control. The connection between power and tranquility was dependent on the total number of subordinates a leader had and on the degree of authority or autonomy a job conferred.

It?s possible, in other words, that the feeling of being in charge of one?s own life more than makes up for the greater amount of responsibility that accompanies higher rungs on the social ladder.

The present study is correlational, meaning it is unable to say whether leadership leads to low stress levels, or whether people who are predisposed to feel little stress are more likely to be leaders. But [researchers] view the study as an initial look at a topic that has relevance to anyone who lives in our inherently hierarchical modern society.

?By looking at real leaders, people who really have a lot of real-world responsibility,? we can learn a lot about stress and health in general,? Gross said.

Bell & Webster precast concrete business streamlined ? Construction ...

Aaron Morby | Tue 25th September | 7:38

Construction software and building products group Eleco said it was on course to return to profit after a wave of redundancies during restructuring at its concrete business.

The firm said it had been forced to cut capacity at its loss-making Bell & Webster Concrete and Milbury Systems businesses because of a downturn in demand for student accommodation and hotel construction activity.

A new business division ElecoPrecast has been formed under a new management team to steer the streamlined business.

John Ketteley, Eleco executive chairman said the restructuring of its precast concrete interests as well as a welcome improvement in the performance of it roofing and cladding products operations came too late to return ElecoBuild to profit in the first six months of the year.

He said: ?ElecoBuild?s costs and production capacity over the past three years have been substantially reduced so as to bring them into line with the lower levels of activity in the UK construction industry.

?As a consequence, we believe that ElecoBuild is now in a better position to respond and take advantage of an upturn in demand.?

In the first half of the year ElecoBuild made an operating loss of ?418,000 before exceptional redundancy costs on turnover slightly down at ?10.1m.

Overall the group, which includes construction software products, made a pre-tax loss of ?480,000 on stable turnover of ?18m.

(AP) ? The Baltimore Orioles dreaded this doubleheader ever since it became part of their schedule late last month.

Beating the same team twice on the same day is not an easy task, even if the opposition is a last-place club in the midst of a losing streak. And so, after Toronto earned a split with a 9-5 win Monday night, the Orioles shrugged their shoulders and looked ahead to another day of chasing the New York Yankees in the AL East.

"Very hard to sweep a doubleheader in the major leagues," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. "It wasn't from a lack of effort. That's why when you get a rainout, you try to play because you know the challenge ahead of you somewhere down the line. The Blue Jays have a lot of pride."

J.P. Arencibia broke open a tight game with a seventh-inning grand slam, leaving the Orioles 1? games out of first place in the division.

In the opener, Adam Jones went 4 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs to lead Baltimore to a 4-1 victory. But the Orioles lost a half-game in the standings to the Yankees, who won 6-3 at Minnesota.

The doubleheader came into being after the teams endured a rainout on Aug. 26.

"You never want to play games like this late in the season," Baltimore right fielder Chris Davis said. "But at the same time, if you can win both of them, you help yourself out. Obviously we weren't able to do that."

The Orioles fell behind 4-0 in the nightcap and missed several bases-loaded chances to take the lead before Arencibia connected off Jake Arrieta to give Toronto a 9-4 cushion.

"I think anytime you strand guys on base you know it's a missed opportunity," Davis said.

Edwin Encarnacion hit his 41st home run for the Blue Jays, who snapped a seven-game skid. Arencibia, who came into the game mired in a 2-for-36 slump, finished with three hits and five RBIs.

Toronto long ago fell out of playoff contention, but the Jays were reminded how fun it is while performing before an enthusiastic crowd of 31,015.

"It's pretty impressive the atmosphere they have here," Arencibia said. "It's a lot of fun to play in that kind of atmosphere."

Ricky Romero (9-14) allowed four runs, eight hits, four walks and a homer in five-plus innings. But a strong performance by the Toronto bullpen enabled the left-hander to end a 13-game losing streak over 15 starts since June 22.

"Good for him and good for us," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. "We needed a win and it's been a long time since Ricky's had a W."

Encarnacion put the Blue Jays up 2-0 against Wei-Yin Chen (12-10) with a two-run drive in the first inning. In the second, Arencibia hit a sacrifice fly and Anthony Gose added an RBI single.

Robert Andino singled in two runs in the bottom half, but Baltimore left the bases loaded. Nate McLouth hit an opposite-field drive to left in the fifth to get Baltimore to 4-3, but the Orioles again left the bases full.

After Moises Sierra homered for Toronto in the sixth, the Orioles loaded the bases with no outs in their half, bringing many in the crowd to their feet. Brad Lincoln replaced Romero and gave up a first-pitch RBI single to J.J. Hardy before striking out Jones. Davis followed with a fly ball to Gose in left field, and Taylor Teagarden was thrown out at the plate after tagging up.

Baltimore also loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth, but scored only once on a double-play grounder.

In the first game, Orioles rookie Steve Johnson (4-0) allowed three hits over five shutout innings to lower his ERA to 1.62. Half his big league wins have come against Toronto.

Although the Blue Jays got two runners on base in three of the first four innings, Johnson worked out of trouble on each occasion.

Jim Johnson, the fifth Baltimore pitcher, worked the ninth for his major league-best 48th save in 51 opportunities.

Jones' four hits tied a career high. Now in his seventh season, Jones has already set career highs with 32 homers and 101 runs, and the All-Star center fielder needs only three RBIs to eclipse his previous high of 83, set last year.

Jones added a single and a double in the nightcap and has hit safely in 19 of 23 games in September, with six home runs and 13 RBIs.

"Adam relishes competition," Showalter said. "He's obviously had a heck of a year. He's turning into quite a player."

Henderson Alvarez (9-14) gave up four runs, eight hits and three walks in 5 2-3 innings. He is 2-7 in his last 10 starts.

In the fourth, Davis walked and Jones followed with a drive to left to put Baltimore up 2-0. Ryan Flaherty hit a solo shot in the fifth, and Jones singled in the sixth and came home on a double-play grounder.

Toronto scored in the eighth on an RBI double by Rajai Davis. With runners on second and third and two outs, Darren O'Day came in to strike out Kelly Johnson.

NOTES: Toronto purchased the contracts of RHPs Shawn Hill and Bobby Korecky and transferred LHP J.A. Happ (foot) to the 60-day DL. ... Orioles LHP Randy Wolf is experiencing discomfort in his left elbow and will undergo an MRI on Tuesday. ... Seventeen of Jones' HRs have given the Orioles the lead. Baltimore is 23-8 when he homers. ... Toronto's first-game defeat was its sixth straight in Baltimore, its longest single-season skid in Charm City since 1980. The Orioles are 10-6 against the Blue Jays, clinching their first season series win over Toronto since 2004. ... Omar Vizquel got two hits to move into a tie with Mel Ott for 40th on the career list with 2,876.

Huawei to launch multiple Windows Phone devices

Huawei has made it to the news many times this month. Being a China based networking and telecommunications equipment supplier, it has some nice phones with its own branding in the market. Apparently, the company is the second largest supplier of mobile telecommunications infrastructure equipment in the world, so by all means the mobile tower your phone is connected to right now will most probably have equipment from this company. Ever since Microsoft?s next gen mobile operating system, Windows Phone 8, was announced, Huawei has been keen on joining the party.

Huawei will be of course launching few Windows Phone 8 handsets. Also, it should be noted Huawei is one among the four strategic cooperation partners at Microsoft for Windows Phone 8 global mobile phone. The other three partners include Nokia, Samsung and HTC. Being a strategic partner, we expect Huawei to launch some great phone, and we?re sure something is cooking.

We had some news about the new phone which will be called as Huawei Ascend W1, and the word had it that it would be launched as early as September 25. It was said that Huawei will be focusing on budget conscious buyers with the Huawei Ascend W1. The new Windows Phone 8 Lumia devices, namely the Lumia 820 and 920 are pretty high end phones, so obviously it?s a no go for buyers with not-so-deep pocket. Now here?s a new news about Huawei. It is said that Huawei will be launching not just one, but two brand new Windows Phone 8 devices at the media event on Sept. 25th. The new handset will be supposedly called as Huawei Ascend W2, and will be equipped with hardware features that will place the device in the league of devices such as Lumia 920 and HTC 8X.The Nokia Lumia 920 comes with a 4.5 inch HD display, 32GB of onboard storage and 1 gig of RAM. The show will be run by Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960. The HTC 8X on the other hand will be sporting a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2 Ghz, though there?s no information on the brand or chipset being used. Coupled with 1 gig RAM and 16 gig ROM, the phone should be snappy.

Each of the phones mentioned above has something special that sets it apart from others. The Lumia 920 uses PureView technology for the camera. No, it?s not the 41 megapixel camera seen on PureView 808, but an 8 megapixel camera. Nevertheless, Nokia promises it to deliver high quality photos. The HTC 8X is a device for media fanatics. It has a 2.55v amplifier that can push the device?s speaker or any enhancement connected to the device to its limits, and it actually manages to do it (Read: HTC Windows Phone 8X audio amplifier demoed).

If Huawei wants to make its phone popular, the phone better have some special feature which other devices don?t have. We?re excited about what it?s going to be. Are you? Let us know your thoughts using the comment form below.

Amid GOP unease, Romney turns eye to swing states

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Mitt Romney's visit to Colorado on Sunday is part of an intensified schedule focused on the most competitive states as the Republican presidential nominee tries to counter criticism from some in his own party that his campaign is veering off course with about six weeks to go in the race.

The evening speech at a Denver-area high school, his first public event of the weekend, comes with Romney facing increasing pressure to spend less time raising money and more time explaining his plans to voters.

President Barack Obama had no official business or campaign activity scheduled.

From Denver, Romney was to begin a three-day bus tour in Ohio on Monday followed by a stop in Virginia ? states that Obama won in 2008 and held by Republicans four years earlier.

It's the last full week before the presidential debates shift the campaign into a new phase, which Romney advisers suggest could prove pivotal after a period marked by negative attention, missteps and Republican concerns.

Already facing reports of internal finger-pointing and foreign policy questions, Romney endured a difficult week during which a secretly recorded video surfaced showing the former Massachusetts governor said that almost half of Americans are dependent upon government and see themselves as victims.

Romney's allies worked to reframe the video as an opportunity to draw a contrast between the level of government dependency that Romney and Obama envision.

"I think we had a good week last week," Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday on ABC's "This Week." ''We were able to frame up the debate last week in the sense of what future do we want and do you want out there for your kids and grandkids?"

In an interview set to air Sunday night, Romney told CBS' "60 Minutes" that his campaign is moving in the right direction. "It doesn't need a turnaround. We've got a campaign which is tied with an incumbent president to the United States," Romney said, according to remarks released in advance by CBS.

While national polls remain tight, polls in several of the most closely watched states, including Colorado, suggest that Obama has opened narrow leads. Obama won Colorado by 9 points four years ago, but the state went to a Republican in the previous three presidential elections.

On Friday, Romney released his 2011 tax returns showing income of $13.7 million, largely from investment income. He spent much of his time this weekend raising money in California, which Democratic presidential nominees have carried for nearly a quarter-century.

While Romney was at a Beverly Hills hotel on Saturday, Obama worked to squash GOP hopes for a resurgence in Wisconsin. He assailed Romney's economic approach before an energized gathering of 18,000, Obama's biggest crowd of the campaign.

Obama faulted Romney for advancing a top-down economic approach that "never works."

"The country doesn't succeed when only the folks at the very top are doing well," Obama said. "We succeed when the middle class is doing well."

Romney raised $6 million at the Saturday evening event that attracted celebrities Dennis Miller and Gary Sinise. Before a group of more than 1,000 California Republicans, Romney kept up his criticism of the president for fostering what Romney said was a culture of dependency.

"This is a tough time. These are our brothers and sisters. These are not statistics. These are people," Romney declared. "The president's policies ? these big-government, big-tax monolithic policies ? are not working."

In a more personal slap at Obama, Romney's campaign on Sunday released a television ad citing a new book by Washington Post editor Bob Woodward that claims that during a 2009 conference call on stimulus negotiations, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., put a verbose Obama on mute. "If he cannot lead his own party, how can he lead America?" the ad says.

Pelosi has denied the incident ever occurred. Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod, responding to the ad, said Romney's efforts to ramp up attacks on Obama were missing the point.

"It's not about them tearing down the president. They simply haven't offered ideas about how they're going to lift up the country," Axelrod said on "This Week." ''And until they do that, I think the American people are going to continue to reject him."

Obama also looked to celebrities to help raise cash and keep bankrolling ads already saturating the most contested states.

Baseball great Hank Aaron supplied the star power at Obama's Milwaukee fundraisers.

"As one who wore the number 44 on his back for decades, I ask you to join me in helping the 44th president of the United States hit a grand slam," said the 78-year-old Aaron.

But Obama's schedule has focused more on voters than donors in recent weeks. The president's campaign says Obama attended seven fundraisers and 14 public events since the day after the Democratic National Convention two weeks ago.

Over the last week alone, Romney has attended five public events, including three rallies, and more than a dozen fundraisers.

Romney adviser Kevin Madden defended the fundraising focus, while highlighting a shift toward swing states in the coming days

"We're here raising the resources we're going to need to compete in all those battleground states through Election Day," Madden said. "That's also been matched with a really intense battle ground state schedule that's going to be coming up starting Sunday night. We're keeping very busy."

But conservative worry remains.

"The Romney campaign has to get turned around. This week I called it incompetent, but only because I was being polite. I really meant 'rolling calamity,'" columnist Peggy Noonan, a former speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan, wrote late last week in The Wall Street Journal.

In Beverly Hills, Romney's California finance committee chairman Thomas Tellefsen tried to reassure supporters. "I wanted to share some thoughts with you tonight. They can provide you some comfort. Polls are not elections. The voters have not yet spoken," Tellefsen said.

Hamilton returning to Texas, Beltre back in lineup

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) ? Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton is returning to Texas for further examination of a sinus problem that has forced him to miss two straight games.

Hamilton tops the majors with 42 home runs. He left Tuesday's series opener in the fourth inning with a recurring sinus problem that makes it tough for him to breathe.

"Everybody in my family's been sick," Hamilton said before the AL West leaders took batting practice. "The last five or six days I've been battling something. Anytime I get sick, it usually turns into a sinus infection. Sometimes it can cause me to be off-kilter, off-balance, but this is the first time it's caused me not to be able to focus the way I want to on the field."

"The more you run when you can't breathe as good, you get a little dizzy, a little thrown off. It just is what it is. If your head's a little stopped up, you can get a little starry-eyed, dizzy. I had the MRI just to make sure everything was good to go. My eyesight is great. I got that checked out. It's 20-15. It used to be 20-10, but I'm getting a little older. That's good, but all the congestion that's in there is slowing things down a bit as far as depth perception and things like that."

Hamilton entered Thursday with one more home run than Detroit's Miguel Cabrera. That's the only Triple Crown category Cabrera is trailing in as he attempts to become the first Triple Crown winner since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski in 1967.

"Maybe I'm sick for a reason. Maybe it's his time," Hamilton said. "I don't really care about holding on to the home run lead. He's a good dude and he's played consistently well for a long time. It would be cool if there was another winner. There's nobody I'd rather see win it than him."

Fellow Texas slugger Adrian Beltre was back in the lineup for the AL West leaders on Thursday night against the Angels. Both players missed Wednesday's game with ailments.

Beltre sat out one game with abdominal discomfort and wasn't in the Rangers' initial lineup Thursday, but talked his way into the cleanup spot as a designated hitter after batting practice.

The Rangers' road trip concludes with three weekend games in Seattle.

Arnold Schwarzenegger In 'Ten' Won't Be The Arnold We Know

The on-screen persona of Arnold Schwarzenegger is known for a few key ingredients. He's got muscles and Bond-like post-kill quips. That's how it has been since "Commando," and some action die-hards never want to see that change. David Ayer has other plans. The "End of Watch" director will be working with Schwarzenegger next on "Ten," [...]

Dodgers survive Nats' big rally for split

WASHINGTON (AP) - Even Matt Kemp was willing to concede the phantom run the umpires said he scored for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the fourth inning - long before his go-ahead homer in the ninth - should not have counted.

Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson ("They obviously blew the call"), third baseman Ryan Zimmerman ("You can't just give out free runs in the big leagues") and catcher Jesus Flores ("Terrible call") were much more blunt about it.

In a wild game Wednesday, Kemp was ruled safe at home to give Los Angeles a six-run lead even though TV replays clearly showed that Zimmerman's head-over-heels lunging tag already had been applied to runner Adrian Gonzalez at third for the inning's final out. After Washington used a six-run eighth to tie the score, Kemp led off the ninth with a homer off closer Tyler Clippard, and the struggling Dodgers grabbed a 7-6 victory for a doubleheader split that prevented the Nationals from sewing up their first playoff berth since moving from Montreal in 2005.

"It looked pretty close. I actually probably should have been running just forward and not looking back. ... I don't know if I quite made it or not," Kemp said, before asking reporters whether they had seen a replay.

Informed that he should not have scored, Kemp said: "Actually, yeah, I don't think I did. But we got lucky right there. We stole a run."

That extra run really loomed large when the hosts - who had won the opener 3-1 thanks largely to Jordan Zimmermann's six innings of one-run baseball - wound up sending 12 batters to the plate while scoring six runs in the eighth.

"At the time, I don't think anyone thought it was a really big deal, but it turned out to be a big deal," Zimmerman said. "It was 5-0, and they just make it 6-0."

Crew chief Mike Winters declined to comment.

"Calls like that, you never know when they're going to come back and kick you," said Washington's Michael Morse, who delivered a leadoff homer and a two-run single in the eighth.

The announced crowd of 26,931 was getting loud, perhaps anticipating a comeback and playoff-clinching victory, when Kemp drove an 0-2, elevated fastball from Clippard (2-5) over the wall in center for his 19th homer.

"I can't remember ever putting a ball in that spot and getting hurt like that in my whole career," said Clippard, who earned his 32nd save of the season in Game 1. "It's a tough one to swallow, but nothing I can do about it now."

Ronald Belisario (7-1) earned the win by getting the last two outs of the eighth inning. Brandon League picked up his third save with a hitless ninth.

Washington's victory in the opener was Los Angeles' ninth loss in 12 games - and lowered the host's magic number for securing at least a wild-card spot to one. But the Nationals must wait at least another day to be certain of making the playoffs.

"We're not shooting for a playoff spot. We're shooting to win a division," Clippard said. "So regardless if we won tonight or not, that's not really where we want to be."

Los Angeles' Game 2 starter, Josh Beckett, threw seven shutout innings but left in the eighth after allowing four runs - three earned - and five hits. By then, Johnson had pulled starters Jayson Werth, Zimmerman and Adam LaRoche - Washington's Nos. 1-3-4 hitters.

While Beckett was terrific for a time, retiring 13 consecutive batters in one stretch, Nationals starter John Lannan struggled almost from the outset. Making his second start since taking over Stephen Strasburg's slot in the rotation, Lannan looked little like the guy who entered the night 3-0 with a 2.41 ERA in the majors in 2012 - and much more like the guy who spent most of the year at Triple-A Syracuse.

He was charged with three runs in each of the third and fourth innings, hurt by singles, walks and a hit batter. In all, Lannan lasted only 3 2-3 innings, giving up eight hits. He departed with the bases loaded in the fourth, giving way to Chien-Ming Wang, who had been out with a hip injury and missed about 2 1/2 months.

Wang's first pitch in a major league game since June 30 missed the mark completely. The wild pitch skipped past catcher Flores, allowing a run to score. The batter, Hanley Ramirez, eventually sent a grounder to Zimmerman, who flipped over and reached out to barely tag out Gonzalez. The umpires ruled that Kemp, who was running home from third on the play, crossed the plate in time to make it 6-0 - but he had not.

Johnson, in his words, "raised a fuss" with the umpires, to no avail.

"They all discussed it, and evidently nobody was paying attention," Johnson said. "Kemp wasn't running. He just wasn't running. The tag play was before. Obviously they missed it, but you'd think when the three of them got together somebody would've been paying attention that Kemp was not at home."

Hours before, as music blared in the Nationals' clubhouse between games, Johnson insisted it didn't matter at all that his team had earned its 90th win and lowered its magic number for a wild-card berth to one.

"The only thing that's going to mean anything to me is when we clinch the pennant," Johnson said. "That's the only thing, the only number, I'm concerned with."

The Nationals' 90 victories are the most for a major league club in the nation's capital since 1933 - which also was the last time a D.C. team played beyond the regular season.

"Just keep the blinders on," Morse said. "Just keep pushing and pushing."

NOTES: Zimmermann (11-8) got the win in Game 1; Aaron Harang (9-10) took the loss. ... Bryce Harper made a twisting, over-the-shoulder catch with his back to the infield on a drive to the deepest part of the park by Shane Victorino leading off the sixth inning in Game 2. ... Victorino stole two bases in Game 1 to raise his season total to 37, tying a career high.

(AP) ? David Letterman is reassuring Mitt Romney that he doesn't hate him ? and getting in a dig at Jay Leno in the process.

The Republican presidential candidate said in a private speech to donors made public this week that Letterman "hates me because I've been on Leno more than him."

Letterman said on the "Late Show" Wednesday that Romney and his wife are welcome on his CBS late-night show. Romney has been on three times but hasn't made any appearances since he became GOP nominee. Democratic President Barack Obama was on Letterman on Tuesday.

Letterman says he certainly doesn't hate Romney for going on Leno's NBC show. Says Letterman: "I mean, why hate a guy who's suffered through that?"
