Open letter to Coalition of African-American Pastors | Washington ...

Dear Colleagues:

I write you as a retired African-American United Methodist Pastor who was a ?foot soldier? in the Civil Rights Movement (Mississippi Freedom Summer, the Selma to Montgomery march, the March on Washington, and a march led by Martin Luther King in Boston to protest school segregation).

As I have read about the coalition and your opposition to President Obama?s support for same-sex marriage as well as to the support by the board of the NAACP for marriage equality, I was reminded of some words from Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

I am a co-partner in a project called ?Truth in Progress.? My partner, Marilyn Bennett is white, lesbian and no longer related to the church because of church opposition to the ordination of gays and lesbians who are open about their same-sex committed relationships. I am African American, straight and still active in the United Methodist Church. I will celebrate my 55th wedding anniversary in November. Marilyn, who has a relationship with Archbishop Tutu and his family and I, wrote Archbishop Tutu asking him to share with Truth in Progress some words in response to the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. This is what Archbishop Tutu wrote that we have posted on the Truth in Progress website:

?May this tragic act help the U.S. to be true to the ideals of the founding persons of your great nation. May you all realize that you really are members of one family, God?s family, the human family: black, white, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, lesbian, transsexual, gay, bisexual, and so-called straight. All belong in the bundle of life ? members of one family, God?s family, the human family.?

Your opposition to President Obama?s support for same-sex marriage, has some relationship to those who in 2008 would not vote for him ?because he is the son of an interracial marriage, and the Bible is against interracial marriage.? These persons used isolated bits of scripture to justify their resistance to interracial marriage just as you are doing the same to oppose same-sex marriage. There is an ?ugliness? to using the Bible to deny some members of ?God?s family? the right to legally marry their same-sex partner. We sometimes say in the African-American community, ?God don?t like ugly.? Archbishop Tutu would agree. He lives in South Africa where same-sex marriage is legal.

I wonder what Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, as she observes the Coalition of African-American Pastors from heaven would say about you? Jordan, who possessed a magnificently sharp mind, a uniquely gifted way of speaking and a deep commitment to the founding principles of our nation was for many years in a partnered relationship with another woman. How wonderful it would have been if she had been able to be ?open? about that relationship in a marriage ? a marriage that the Coalition would have denied her having.

Colleagues in the Coalition, while you are opposing President Obama?s support for same-sex marriage, there are groups and persons whom you know, who may be your supporters, who have supported legislation in their respective states to suppress voter participation in the presidential election. They claim that they are concerned about voter fraud, and thus they for the first time are demanding new identification requirements. But some of them have ?let the cat out of the bag? as they have said their efforts are directed toward the defeat of President Obama.

I end this ?Open Letter? by asking you, ?Have you thought of what your grandchildren, nieces and nephews and other young people will say when in the future they read of what you and your colleagues did to attempt to defeat the first African-American president in history?? History will not be kind to you and neither will the generations that follow you.

North Carolina is home to an extensive number of colleges and universities, with many clustered around some of our more populous cities. Living space is always in demand for college students, and according to realtors around the country, some people are looking to invest in residential real estate that can be leased out to students.

Some of the investors are parents whose children are attending college. Dismayed by the often high cost of school-provided dormitories and looking for a source of income to counter the ever-rising price of a college education, some parents have bought houses that they rent out to their son's or daughter's friends. While having an already existing acquaintance with a child's friends may produce a positive landlord-tenant relationship, there are potential pitfalls.

As the parents may be aware, a variety of legal issues can crop up that are part of owning any piece of real property. An owner may have to contend with boundary disputes or may purchase a property that is subject to an easement, which could potentially restrict the owner's desire to make changes to the property.

In addition, there are issues more particular to renting out a home. Zoning restrictions may place a limit on the number of tenants, which could affect the amount of rental income an owner expects to receive from the property. In addition, real estate law imposes a variety of responsibilities on landlords. It is important that parents or investors consider all of the legal issues that can arise before they decide to purchase and rent out a piece of real estate.

Archstone Makes Two Top Appointments

Apartment investment and operations firm Archstone has promoted Charles Mueller to president & COO. Mueller had held leadership roles at Archstone since 1994, and has worked as the company?s COO since 2007 while retaining responsibilities as CFO, a position he took in 1998. Mueller received his bachelor?s degree in business administration in real estate and finance from the University of Texas at Austin and his Master of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University.

The company has also hired Webster Neighbor as its CFO. Neighbor comes to the firm from Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., where he most recently worked as senior vice president. During his time with Lehman Brothers, Neighbor completed more than $30 billion worth of public and private real estate transactions. He was also responsible for managing Lehman?s investments in Archstone after the company?s privatization in 2007. Neighbor holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University and a Master of Business Administration in Corporate Finance with an emphasis in Real Estate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

CBRE Makes Four Big Moves

CBRE Group Inc. has announced that Calvin Frese will step into the position of CEO of the company?s Americas business, its largest operating unit. The group also announced that Mike Lafitte will serve as global president of CBRE Services. Chris Kirk, CBRE?s global director of human resources, has also moved up and is now the firm?s chief administrative officer. The firm has tapped Laura O?Brien to take on the post of global director of human resources and workplace strategy.

NGKF Bolsters Midwest, Las Vegas Offices

Newmark Grubb Knight Frank has promoted and added key personnel in its Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Detroit and Las Vegas offices. Four changes took place in the three Midwestern offices, with new executive managing directors including Robert Nosal in Cleveland, Frederick Liesveld in Detroit and Gerald McLaughlin and Louis Oliva in Pittsburgh. In Las Vegas, John Knott and Michael Parks joined the NGKF operation.

Morris Named Wells Chief Real Estate Officer

Wells Real Estate Funds has named Patricia Morris chief real estate officer. She will replace Don Henry, who is resigning after 10 years of service. Morris was previously the managing director of asset management at Wells. She has more than 25 years of experience in the sector and joined the firm in 2003 from Prudential Real Estate Investors, where she worked as director of asset management and as a portfolio manager.

Kevin Smith Joins CAPREIT as SVP

CAPREIT Inc. has hired Kevin Smith as a senior vice president. Smith, who has 18 years of real estate experience, comes to the firm from Centerline Capital Group, where he held the title of director of mortgage banking. Smith has also served as a managing director at Holliday Fenoglio Fowler L.P. and as president of ARK Realty Capital. In his new role, Smith will work to manage the existing debt/equity relationships and source large individual or portfolio acquisitions.

Berkeley Point Capital Hires McDevitt as President

Commercial real estate finance veteran Jim McDevitt has been named president of Berkeley Point Capital. McDevitt, most recently an executive vice president & head of correspondent development for Wells Fargo Multifamily Capital, will be responsible for day-to-day operations, including the firm?s production, underwriting and closing activities. Other executives also recently joining the firm are Bill Mott and Stephan Gianoplus, managing directors; Ira Strassberg, CFO; Anurag Saksena, chief risk officer; and Joseph Turitz, general counsel & corporate secretary.

Colliers Names McKenna EVP

Colliers International has named Kevin McKenna executive vice president in the industrial specialty, based in the firm?s Ontario, Calif., office. McKenna has completed more than $3 billion worth of real estate transactions in his 25-year career. He joins Colliers from CBRE Group Inc., where he served as executive vice president. McKenna holds a bachelor?s degree in business administration with an emphasis in accounting from the University of Southern California. He serves on the boards of SIOR and NAIOP.

Voit Adds Las Vegas Office Team

The Cayton Office Team, which is led by Jayne Cayton and recognized as a top-producing brokerage team in the Las Vegas market, has joined Voit Real Estate Services? Las Vegas office. The addition falls in line with the firm?s ongoing strategy to have top teams for each product type in the Las Vegas market. The team includes Jayne Cayton and Paula Lea. Cayton, who joins the firm as vice president, has more than 12 years of experience in the commercial real estate industry. Prior to joining Voit, she served as vice president at CBRE Group Inc. Lea, who joins Voit as an associate, was also with CBRE. The two have partnered since 2010.
