Toddler's cuss word on 'Modern Family' draws ire (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? An anti-profanity crusader on Tuesday asked ABC to pull this week's "Modern Family" episode in which a toddler appears to use a bleeped curse word.

"Our main goal is to stop this from happening," said McKay Hatcher, an 18-year-old college student who founded the No Cussing Club in 2007. "If we don't, at least ABC knows that people all over the world don't want to have a 2-year-old saying the `F-bomb' on TV."

"We hope they know better," said Hatcher. He's asking his club's members, whom he said number 35,000 in the United States and about three-dozen other countries, to complain to ABC.

ABC has yet to respond, he said Tuesday. The network had no comment, a spokeswoman said.

In the episode titled "Little Bo Bleep" airing 9 p.m. EST Wednesday, 2-year-old Lily shocks parents Mitchell and Cameron (Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet) with her first expletive.

The dads, who are preparing Lily to serve as flower girl in a wedding, now have an added parenting challenge.

The tot is played by Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who says the word "fudge" during taping. It will be bleeped on the air and her mouth will be obscured by pixilation, and viewers will get the impression that her character used the actual F-word.

Steven Levitan, creator and executive producer of the sitcom with Christopher Lloyd, told the Television Critics Association last week that he's "proud and excited" about the F-word plotline that ABC was persuaded to allow.

"We thought it was a very natural story since, as parents, we've all been through this," Levitan said to EW.com. "We are not a sexually charged show. It has a very warm tone so people accept it more. I'm sure we'll have some detractors."

The program, which won the Emmy Award for best comedy last fall, was named best musical or comedy series at Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony.

Hatcher, who is from South Pasadena and attends Brigham Young University in Rexburg, Idaho, said he began his anti-profanity club in 2007 when he noticed how rampant cursing was at his school and how it was linked to bullying.

"If kids are accountable for their choices, then adults should be as well," and that includes media, he said.

TV profanity was an issue before the Supreme Court last week, which heard arguments about whether regulating curse words and nudity on broadcast stations is sensible when cable and satellite services offer channels with few restrictions. A decision is expected by late June.

German chief calls for gays to come out

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -The departing German football federation president says it's time for gay players to come out.

Theo Zwanziger, who will leave the post in March, called on gay players "to have the courage to declare themselves," although he conceded it was surely difficult to acknowledge one's homosexuality within a team.

Zwanziger pointed to the example of Berlin Mayor Klaus Wowereit, who came out years ago.

Speaking at a discussion on the subject organized by the federation, Zwanziger said on Tuesday that society was more understanding than a few years ago for any gays in football willing to out themselves.

Germany captain Philipp Lahm, however, disagrees.

"Football is like being the gladiators in the old times," Lahm said in an interview published Monday. "The politicians can come out these days, for sure, but they don't have to play in front of 60,000 people every week.

"I don't think that the society is that far ahead that it can accept homosexual players as something normal as in other areas."

Zwanziger said Lahm is a tolerant person "and if that's how he sees the situation, I am not going to be the one to criticize him."

No player in Germany's professional leagues has so far acknowledged his homosexuality.

Rupert Murdoch Attacks Google, Obama In Pro-SOPA Twitter Rant

Rupert Murdoch sounded off on Saturday about the White House's rejection of SOPA and PIPA, the controversial anti-piracy bills currently being debated in Congress.

"So Obama has thrown in his lot withSilicon Valley paymasters who threaten all software creators with piracy, plain thievery," he wrote on Twitter. "Piracy leader is Google who streams movies free, sells advts around them. No wonder pouring millions into lobbying."

Murdoch has lobbied aggressively for the bills, which many critics call web censorship. On Saturday, the White House announced that they would not support the legislation.

Supporters of the legislation--including Murdoch's News Corp, which owns 20th Century Fox films and a variety of successful TV shows--argue that the bills would help protect copyright.

Google is one of the most vocal opponents of SOPA and PIPA. Co-founder Sergey Brin has said that the bills "give the U.S. government and copyright holders extraordinary powers including the ability to hijack DNS and censor search results (and this is even without so much as a proper court trial)."

Turn Off Your Phone to Quickly Eliminate Stress [Stress]

New research from the British Psychological Society suggests turning off your smartphone and ignoring social networks could be a simple way to quickly reduce stress.

The study found that stress was most commonly associated with personal use of smartphones and not as often when used for work. The theory is that the stress comes from constantly checking the phone for social networking updates. As the stress level increases so does the compulsion to check social networks. The psychologist in charge of the study suggests simple tips to curbing this behavior in the workplace:

Organisations will not flourish if their employees are stressed, irrespective of the source of stress, so it is in their interest to encourage their employees to switch their phones off; cut the number of work emails sent out of hours, reduce people's temptation to check their devices.

In might be a good idea to take the same advice even if you don't use your smartphone for work. Turn off the phone when you're not expecting important calls and remove notifications from social apps. Photo by Phil Campbell.
