Archaeologists discover the tomb of a Mayan prince in Mexico

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? Researchers in the Department of Anthropology of the Americas at the University of Bonn have been digging for four years together with Mexican antiquity authorities from the Mayan city of Uxul in Campeche, Mexico. The aim of the excavation project under the direction of Prof. Dr. Nikolai Grube and Dr. Kai Delvendahl is to research the process of centralization and collapse of hegemonic state structures in the Mayan Lowlands using the example of the mid-sized archeological site (Uxul) and its ties to the supraregional center (Calakmul).

Since 2011, excavations have concentrated on the royal palace of Uxul which is located directly south of the main squares in the center of Uxul. The royal palace extends 120 x 130 meters and consists of at least eleven individual buildings which all are aligned around five courtyards. "The finished palace complex was built around 650 AD, a time when the neighboring ruling dynasty from Calakmul was in the process of taking over large areas of the Mayan Lowlands," explains Professor Grube. During excavation work in the largest palace building in Uxul, Structure K2, six relief panels were found in 2011 showing four kings from this ruling dynasty from Calakmul playing ball. Scientists believe that Uxul, originally a smaller independent kingdom, was inhabited and ruled from time to time by the leaders of the ruling Kaan Dynasty in Calakmul. But the influence subsided after 705 AD, and there is a strong likelihood that a local ruling family came to power for a few generations. At the start of the 9th century, Uxul was almost completely deserted.

Lavish burial offerings

"As part of the 2012 excavation campaign a tomb has been unearthed roughly 1.5 meters below the southern rooms of the K2 building that can be dated back to right after the end of the influence of Calakmul and where a prince most likely was buried. Inscriptions on various containers found in the burial tomb chamber point to this fact," explains Dr. Delvendahl. The walls of the vault are made of brick and were covered with a corbel vault, typical for the Mayan culture. In the interior of this tomb chamber which dates back 1,300 years, the remains of a young man were discovered who was buried on his back with his arms folded over his stomach. Around him were the remains of lavish burial offerings such as four ceramic plates and five ceramic cups in an exceptionally preserved state, some of which were decorated with spectacular paintings and reliefs. A unique plate with the painting in the codex-style was lying on the skull of the deceased.

Cup with dedication gives away position of the deceased

"There was a simple message on a cup in elegantly modeled hieroglyphics that read: '[This is] the cup of the young man /prince'. And a second modeled container also appears to mention a young man /prince," says Professor Grube. Although these mentions are not definite clues as to the identity of the deceased, the location of the tomb and the absence of certain burial objects like jade jewellery would indicate his position and nevertheless lead us to conclude that the deceased is a young prince who was not in direct line for the throne. The date on one of the cups is 711 AD and the death of the young prince as well as the area of his tomb can be dated back to the first decades of the 8th century. In particular, the exceptionally preserved ceramics make this tomb one of the most significant discoveries of its kind in the entire Mayan Lowlands.

The excavation site is situated close to the border with Guatemala and is being funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

Couple to remarry almost 50 years after divorce

Roland Davis and Lena Henderson (Sharon Cantillon/Buffalo News)Roland Davis and Lena Henderson (Sharon Cantillon/Buffalo News)

Never doubt the power of second chances. A couple, Lena Henderson and Roland Davis of West Seneca, New York, who divorced in 1964, are remarrying almost 50 years later.

According to a story in the Buffalo News, the two married as teenagers in Chattanooga, Tenn., and had four children. But even after the pair divorced 20 years later, they stayed friendly and kept in touch.

Davis remarried and moved to Colorado. Their youngest daughter, Renita Chadwick, noted to the Buffalo News, "The way they would act to each other never indicated there was anything but a friendship between them. My mother never had a harsh or contrary word to say about my dad, and my dad never had anything but loving remarks to make about my mother."

When Davis' second wife died, Henderson and their oldest daughter worried about him being alone, and urged him to move back to New York. Davis decided he wanted to do more than move. He popped the question to his ex-wife over the phone. "'Will you marry me again?" He asked. She answered, "Well, well, yes."

The 85-year-olds will tie the knot for a second time on August 4. Davis told the newspaper, "I always thought it might happen. It was always in the back of my mind. We're just thankful that we could get back together."

Their second chance at romance is capturing the hearts of people around them. When the two showed up at City Hall to get their marriage license, they were met by cheering office workers.

The wedding will be filled with four generations of their family. The bride will wear blue. The groom will wear a tuxedo.

Davis told UPI, "You don't think people are going to get married at this age. We're just thankful we've lived this long and that we're still here. We have a lot to be thankful for."

How to Optimise your Digital Camera Settings for the Best Results?

Don't we all want those perfect blues and greens in our pictures and feel anxious to see the results only to find that the camera failed you? The blues don't come out as blue as you thought nor does the exposure strike the right chord.

Thing with digital photography is that there is so much of post processing done these days that it has raised the expectations of a common amateur photographer and one wants to settle down for nothing but the best colors and tone.

Fortunately in the digital cameras world, it is possible. Here is how:

* For that perfect blue and deep color it is important that your white balance is set perfectly. If you are uncertain about how to do it, your best bet is still the auto white balance mode although do not have high hopes then. There are times when it screws up the pictures. Alternatively try to dial through the different White Balance modes and see which tones suits your taste. Try this when you know that the lighting conditions are same such as outdoors or under white florescent lights.

* Spike up the colors a little. If you want to completely avoid post processing, you can try to work on the colors a little and increase their saturation levels by few notches. This would enable brighter and deeper colors, straight from the camera. No need to Photoshop or Lightroom your images.

* Avoid flash. While there are times when you have no option but to click using a flash, it is always good to play with camera settings to avoid such situations. This can be done with aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings. Using flash otherwise spoils the depth and leaves the picture looking very flat.

* Explore modes. The beauty about DSLR and digital cameras is that they understand light better than humans and when you dial into the right mode such as AV, TV or Auto, the camera lets you control just the bare minimum features and computes the rest on its own. AV suits the best when you want to control the depth in the photograph, TV works the best when you are shooting motion and Auto is the ideal one when the shooting conditions are too difficult for amateurs to control. By leveraging these inbuilt modes, you can capture good photographs even in difficult situations.

Other settings that one can look into are the Picture modes. They let you control various factors such as the Color Saturation, Picture Sharpness, Contrast, Tints et al. Many cameras let you define each factor independently. You can try to play around with the settings there and find a combination that works the best for you.

In the end, never stop reading about photography. Many a times, a simple trick and tweak in colors and contrast deliver such amazing results that even the photographers wonder how come they missed the trick for so long! So read try and experiment and you soon may find the best setting for your shooting style.

India ethnic unrest toll rises to 50

The death toll from ethnic unrest in India's northeast rose to 50 on Saturday while at least 400,000 languished in relief camps as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh visited the conflict-hit area.

The national government has dispatched medical teams to Assam to tend to the victims of the fighting that erupted eight days ago between indigenous Bodo tribes and Muslim settlers over long-running land disputes.

The chief minister of far-flung Assam state, Tarun Gogoi, said the region was now calm after what he called "unprecedented" violence as the focus shifted to providing relief to the 400,000 people who fled their homes.

The death toll climbed to 50 as police reported in a statement that the bodies of five more people killed in the riots had been recovered.

Singh, who represents Assam in the Indian parliament's upper house, was slated to tour relief camps on Saturday accompanied by ruling Congress party chief Sonia Gandhi.

The chief minister described the violence as the worst crisis his government has faced, with rival groups from both sides attacking villages, beating people to death with sticks and burning down homes.

People in the camps have said they were afraid of returning to their homes.

"We are living in fear and we can't even think about going back to our homes," Bimla Basumatary, one of the displaced, told India's NDTV television network.

Gogoi has blamed Singh's government for the escalation in violence, saying it failed to send troops immediately after the unrest erupted.

Now at least 3,000 extra soldiers and paramilitary personnel are patrolling the region.

The international rights group Human Rights Watch said tensions had been building for more than two months between the Bodo and Muslim communities, which have clashed in the past over access to land and resources.

The group urged authorities to rescind the "shoot-on-sight" orders and "promptly investigate and prosecute those responsible while addressing the underlying causes of the clashes".

7 Strategies to Cease "Selling" - PyaarDosti.com| Friends

Sometimes we can all use a friendly reminder to keep us from backsliding into old approaches of thinking about promoting that lead us down the wrong path with potential clients.

New Thinking = New Results

Maybe it?s time to take a different approach. Maybe we need to seriously analyze our sales thinking so we can identify why we?re not making more sales. Take a look at the table below and thinkabout your current promoting mindset. How would your promoting behaviors change if you changed your sales thinking?

Traditional Sales Mindset Vs Unlock The Game Mindset

1. Always deliver a strong sales pitch. Vs Stop the sales pitch ? and start a conversation.

2. Your central objective is always to close the sale. Vs Your central goal is always to discover whether you and your potential client are a good fit.

3. When you lose a sale, it?s usually at the end of the sales process. Vs When you lose a sale, it?s usually right at the beginning of the sales process.

4. Rejection is a normal part of promoting. Vs Sales pressure is the only cause of rejection. Rejection should never happen.

5. Keep chasing every potential client until you get a yes or a no. Vs Never chase a potential client ? you?ll only trigger more sales pressure.

6. When a prospect offers objections, challenge and/or counter them. Vs When a potential client offers objections, uncover the truth behind them.

7. If a potential client challenges the value of your product or service, you must defend yourself and explain the value. Vs Never defend yourself or what you have to offer ? it only creates more sales pressure.

Let?s take a closer look at these central Unlock The Game concepts so you can begin to open up your current sales thinking and become more effective in your promoting activities:

1) Quit the sales pitch ? and start a conversation.

When you call someone, avoid making a mini-presentation about yourself, your company, and what you have to offer. Start with an opening conversational phrase that focuses on a specific problem that your product or service solves. If you don?t know what this is, ask your current customers why they purchased your solution. One example of an opening phrase might be, ?I?m just calling to see if you?d be open to some different ideas related to lowering the risk of any computer downtime you may be having in your company?? Notice that you are not pitching your solution with this opening phrase.

2) Your central goal is always to discover whether you and your potential client are a good fit.

Let go of trying to ?close the sale? or ?get the appointment?? and you will discover that you don?t have to take responsibility for moving the sales process forward. If you simply focus your conversation on problems that you can help potential clients solve, and if you don?t jump the gun by trying to move the sales process forward, you will find that potential clients will actually bring you into their buying process.

3) When you lose a sale, it?s usually right at the beginning of the sales process.

If you believe that you lose sales because you make a mistake at the end of the process, take a look back at how you began the relationship. Did you start with a presentation? Did you use traditional sales language like, ?We have a solution that I believe you really need? or ?Others in your industry have bought our solution, so you should consider it as well??

When you use traditional sales language, potential clients can?t help but label you with the negative stereotype of ?salesperson.? This makes it almost impossible for them to relate to you from a position of trust. And if trust isn?t established at the outset, honest communication about the problems they?re trying to solve, and how you might be able to help them, becomes impossible too.

4) Sales pressure is the only cause of rejection. Rejection should never happen.

Rejection happens for only one reason: Something you said, as subtle as it might have been, triggered a defensive reaction from your potential client. Yes, something you said. To eliminate rejection, simply shift your mindset so that you give up the hidden agenda of hoping to make a sale. Instead, everything you say and do should stem from the basic mindset that you are there to help potential clients. This makes you able to ask, ?Would you be open to talking about issues you might be having affecting your business??

5) Never chase a potential client?you?ll only trigger more sales pressure.

?Chasing? potential clients has always been considered normal and necessary, but it?s rooted in the macho selling image that, ?If you don?t keep chasing, it means you?re giving up ? and that means you?re a failure.? This is dead wrong! Instead of chasing potential clients, tell them that you would like to avoid anything that resembles the old cat-and-mouse chasing game by scheduling a time for your next chat.

6) When a potential client offers objections, uncover the truth behind them.

Most traditional sales programs spend a lot of time focusing on ?overcoming objections.? These tactics only put more sales pressure on potential clients and also fail to explore or understand the truth behind what the potential client is saying. When you hear, ?We don?t have the budget,? ?Send me information,? or ?Call me in a few months,? do you think you?re hearing the truth, or do you suspect that these are polite evasions designed to end the conversation?

Rather than trying to counter objections, you can uncover the truth by replying, ?That?s not a problem? ? no matter what clients are ?objecting? to ? and then using gentle, dignified language that invites them to reveal the truth about their situation.

7) Never defend yourself or what you have to offer ? it only creates more sales pressure.

When a potential client says, ?Why should I choose you over your competition?,? your first, instinctive reaction is probably to start defending your product or service because you want to convince them to buy. But what do you think goes through your potential client?s mind at that point?

Something like, ?This ?salesperson? is trying to sell me on why what they have to offer is better, but I hate feeling as if I?m being sold.? Rather than defending yourself, try suggesting that you aren?t going to try to convince them of anything because that would only create sales pressure. Instead, ask them about the key problems that they are trying to solve, and then explore how your product or service might solve those problems ?without ever trying to persuade.. Let potential clients feel that they can choose you without feeling ?sold.?

You too can improve your sales effectiveness if you are open minded and willing to try a new and more natural promoting approach.

European rabbis fear circumcision row could spread

(AP Photo/Gero Breloer)

(AP) ? A group of Orthodox rabbis warned Wednesday that the ancient Jewish practice of infant male circumcision could face further restrictions in Europe after some hospitals in Austria and Switzerland suspended the procedure by citing a German court ruling that it could amount to criminal bodily harm.

Last month's verdict by a regional court in Cologne didn't ban circumcision. But it prompted angry protests from Jewish and Muslims groups, especially after the German Medical Association advised doctors not to perform unnecessary circumcisions until the legal situation is clarified ? something Germany's government has pledged to do soon.

Two weeks ago, a hospital in the Swiss city of Zurich also suspended circumcisions, saying it wanted to investigate public concerns about the procedure, which involves cutting off a boy's foreskin. Anti-circumcision campaigners say the act breaches the child's right to bodily integrity, while faith groups insist it is part of their religious freedom.

"Of course we in Switzerland aren't directly affected by the Cologne ruling, but it sparked a debate about how to deal with the medical and ethical issues involved," said Marco Stuecheli, a spokesman for Zurich's Children's Hospital.

On Tuesday, the governor of Vorarlberg province in Austria told state-run hospitals to stop circumcisions except for health reasons until the legal situation is clarified. He said he sees the German decision, which arose from the case of a child whose circumcision led to medical complications, as a "precedence-setting judgment."

"Our fears that the court ruling in Cologne could have a knock-on effect across Europe are now being realized," said Pinchas Goldschmidt, the president of the Conference of European Rabbis.

He said Jewish leaders across the continent would seek out lawmakers and government officials to impress on them how central the practice is to their faith, and to forestall further restrictions elsewhere.

While Muslims, too, commonly circumcise their sons at a young age, in Judaism the procedure must take place eight days after birth. According to religious law, an uncircumcised male isn't considered fully part of the Jewish community, Goldschmidt said.

"In order to change that we would have to convene a supreme Jewish religious court, which has not convened for the last 2,000 years," he told The Associated Press.

The German government is expected to propose a bill this fall which would ensure that circumcision remains legal in the country.

The Children's Hospital in Zurich said it hopes to reach a decision next month about whether to resume circumcisions. So far, the suspension has delayed only two planned operations, because many Jewish parents prefer to have their sons circumcised privately, Stuecheli said.

Cosmic ray haul for 'space LHC'

The largest-ever experiment in space has reported the collection of some 18 billion "cosmic ray" events that may help unravel the Universe's mysteries.

The data haul is far greater than the total number of cosmic rays recorded in a full century of looking to date.

Run from a centre at Cern, the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) aims to spot dark matter and exotic antimatter.

The astronauts who installed it on the space station in 2011 are in Geneva to see an update on how it is performing.

Mission commander Mark Kelly told reporters that AMS was "the pinnacle of the science that the ISS will do".

The huge number of events seen by the experiment includes some of the highest-energy particles from the cosmos that we have ever seen.

Kelly's flight - the STS-134 mission - was the last for the shuttle Endeavour before it was retired from the Nasa fleet.

The crew visited the Payload and Operations Control Centre at Cern on Wednesday, where a shift of six scientists is watching what is whizzing through the AMS 24 hours a day.

Seven-tonne giant

AMS deputy spokesman Roberto Battiston told BBC News that seeing the astronauts back in town was "a great joy".

"We are really thankful of these astronauts because we should never forget they put their lives at stake to do something that for us is pure fun - that is our interest, our curiosity," he said.

"They have high expectations that the AMS will find something interesting, because they put a lot of effort into it. They feel part of the family."

At the heart of the seven-tonne, $2bn machine is a giant, specially designed magnet which bends the paths of extraordinarily high-energy charged particles called cosmic rays onto a series of detectors, giving hints of what the particles are.

A series of ever-larger particle accelerators built here on Earth aim to drive particles to ever-higher energies, smashing them into one another to simulate the same processes that create them elsewhere in the cosmos.

But no Earth-bound experiment can match nature's power as a particle accelerator - and Earth's atmosphere absorbs incoming cosmic rays - so the AMS will catch some of these high-energy particles "from the source", as a kind of complement to the likes of the Large Hadron Collider.

In scientific terms, the stakes could not be higher. The AMS should be able to spot the results of collisions of the mysterious dark matter that makes up most of the mass of our Universe, catch completely new forms of matter that include the aptly named "strange" quark, or resolve why the Universe we see is made mostly of matter rather than antimatter.

"It took more than 35 missions to build the International Space Station - very complicated space shuttle flights - to construct this incredible laboratory in space," said Captain Kelly.

"When we installed AMS, that was the last piece of the ISS, then the space station was complete. This is really the pinnacle of the science that ISS will do, in my opinon the most significant experiment we have on board."

Dark energy and dark matter mysteries

  • Gravity acting across vast distances does not seem to explain what astronomers see
  • Galaxies, for example, should fly apart; some other mass must be there holding them together
  • Astrophysicists have thus postulated "dark matter" - invisible to us but clearly acting on galactic scales
  • At the greatest distances, the Universe's expansion is accelerating
  • Thus we have also "dark energy" which acts to drive the expansion, in opposition to gravity
  • The current theory holds that 73% of the Universe is dark energy, 23% is dark matter, and just 4% the kind of matter we know well

In its 14 months of operation, the AMS has logged some 18 billion cosmic rays - more than collected in a century of looking before now.

But the AMS is a one-of-a-kind machine, so it has taken some time just to understand what it is seeing hundreds of times per second - and the team has only analysed a few percent of the data.

Nobel laureate Sam Ting of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has led the project since its inception some 17 years ago, through a number of setbacks and budget concerns that nearly saw the project shelved altogether - until an act of the US Congress and an unscheduled shuttle mission put it in space.

The team has already noted an excess of extremely high-energy positrons - the antimatter equivalent of electrons - and atomic nuclei at 9 teraelectronvolts (TeV) - higher even than the LHC can produce.

But Prof Ting is interested most of all in careful, methodical work, and is in no hurry to formally announce any findings.

"I have told my collaborators that in the next 40-50 years it is very unlikely people will be so foolish as to repeat this experiment, given the difficulty I ran into," Prof Ting told BBC News.

"Therefore it's extremely important when we publish a result, we publish it correctly, because otherwise you'll certainly mislead physics and there's no way to check us."

Looking for answers

Mission specialist on STS-134 Greg Chamitoff told BBC News that it was "great to be able to celebrate together" with the AMS team.

"If they discover an antimatter particle - even one - that''ll be phenomenal, because they'll also know which direction it came from and they might be able to say 'that galaxy over there is an animtatter galaxy'," he said.

"What we learn from what it discovers could really transform our understanding of what's in the Universe."

The astronauts were accompanied by their wives, including STS-134 mission commander Mark Kelly's wife, Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. The trip to Cern is her first international journey since recovering from a gun attack in her home state just a few months before the mission.

Cern's director of research Sergio Bertolucci welcomed the visitors, saying "it is a clear sign that we'll not find our answers in only one place".

"The fact that AMS is addressing some of the same questions (as the LHC) is in my opinion a nice way in which we see that in this field we cannot get too specialised because probably the answer we're looking for... needs more, different inputs," he told BBC News.

"After all, we're trying to explain this small thing: why the Universe is like it is."

Prof Ting stubbornly refuses to be drawn on what he expects, or even hopes, to find as the team catches up with its glut of data.

Instead he imagines that perhaps we cannot conceive of what is to come.

"Look at particle physics in the last half century," he said.

"In the 60s, the largest accelerators were at Cern and Brookhaven, to study nuclear forces. At Cern, they discovered neutral currents; at Brookhaven they found two kinds of neutrinos, CP violation and the J particle. All three were given Nobel prizes. At Fermilab, the original purpose was to study neutrino physics, what was discovered was the 5th and 6th quarks.

"When you build something new, you ask the best expert what could be discovered, but what you discover with a precision insturment normally has nothing to do with the original purpose."

Royal edinburgh military tattoo bond brave and the beano to feature ...

THIS year?s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo promises to be the most unusual in the event?s history - with a Bond theme, a Pictish warrior, a celebration of Scotch whisky, Dennis the Menace and a re-enactment of the Queen?s coronation set to feature in this year?s show.

Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Comic-strip superheroes will be celebrated by the US Navy band, an Australian dance troupe is to tackle Scotland?s engineering heritage, while a massed band will bring music from the Disney-Pixar film Brave to life on Edinburgh Castle esplanade.

It has already emerged that Dennis the Menace and Minnie the Minx will be let loose at the event to cause regular bouts of mayhem during the show.

Among the star attractions are expected to be the Australian Defence Force band, the ?Top Secret Drum Corps? band from the Swiss city of Basel, the King of Norway?s Guard and South Africa?s Cape Town Highlanders pipe band.

The event has been a complete sell-out for the last 13 years and organisers are hoping for another run of full houses despite a clash with much of the London Olympics.

Brigadier David Allfrey, the show?s producer, said the finale of this year?s performance would be dedicated to the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee, with the audience being taken on a journey back to her coronation.

He said: ?We are privileged and fortunate to have lived in the time of Queen Elizabeth II.

?When we chart the seismic changes in our society and in the world over her reign, we cannot help but reflect on Her Majesty?s relentless sense of duty, wisdom and balance in the round over an extraordinary 60 years.

?In our production we have tried to play our part in the celebrations by focusing on the special sparkle in diamonds.?

The brigadier is urging audiences to ?bling up? for the event by wearing sparkling outfits, tiaras and other dazzling accoutrements for the occasion, with the show?s climax also expected to feature a rendition of the classic Bond anthem ?Diamonds Are Forever.?

Tickets for this year?s show, which runs from August 3-25, are still on sale.

It?s a platform, not a feature: Google+ Hangouts could bring YouTube-level disruption

Ever since Google+ launched, one of the most intriguing projects to come out of the company?s social strategy is Google+ Hangouts. Basically, it?s a tool to broadcast live video and interact with multiple people at once. It?s a gorgeous product, and works extremely well on both mobile and desktop environments.

Having said that, the folks who are still calling Google+ a ?social network? seem to have started to cast a shadow on Google+ Hangouts, specifically Mike Isaac of AllThingsD. Today, he writes:

?as time passes in a Hangout, the novelty of a group video chat wears off. In the lack of direction, the retention rate suffers.

Thus the dilemma of Hangouts on Google+. Sure, it may be a cool feature, but in the long run, is cool enough?

The first issue is tracking the ?success? of Hangouts. Basically, you don?t know how many Hangouts have taken place on the platform, because not all of them are public. This public vs. private functionality of Google+ has caused many tech analysts to throw up their hands and call the Google+ destination site a ?Ghost Town.?

The second issue I have with Isaac?s assessment of the potential direction of Hangouts is that he refers to it as a ?feature.? This is flawed thinking, just like calling YouTube a feature would be. Google+ Hangouts is a live-streaming platform, one that developers can build apps for. A ?feature? is a +1 button offered up by Google+.

How many live-streaming platforms that provide a third-party API can you rattle off? Not many, I would suspect.

When I think about the power of a platform, I think about how many ways it can be integrated into our daily lives. Video is such a tough nut to crack that we?ve barely scratched the surface. The companies that are well-known for video chat include Skype, which happens to have a partnership with Facebook. It?s a limited experience though, meant for one-on-one conversation.

Hangouts have already destroyed that experience and made it better, so just like any platform, it will take time for developers to make things get even more interesting.

YouTube is a platform for sharing and digesting videos, and it?s a hell of a platform at that. YouTube now brings revenue in for video makers that wasn?t available for them on the web years ago. The same thing can and will happen for Google+ Hangouts. Up until now, you had to have a sophisticated setup or hack to pipe in a bunch of interviewees and make it available to everyone for viewing.

Google+ Hangouts makes that a snap. It?s not a feature, it?s a platform. It?s a platform that could make money for content creators, create a new niche for developers to dive into and make communication better overall. Games, business tools, charitable causes, television shows, plays, dance instructors, chefs and more could benefit from Google+ Hangouts in the longrun.

Platforms take time to grow, and thinking of it in a binary, ?pass? or ?fail? way is a short-sighted way of looking at things.

How to Resurrect a Mammoth Protein [Interactive]

Web Exclusives | Evolution

Researchers can now reconstruct genes from extinct animals and study the proteins they encoded

In the August issue of Scientific American, physiologist Kevin Campbell of the University of Manitoba in Canada and molecular biologist Michael Hofreiter of the University of York in England describe recent advances in biotechnology that are enabling researchers to reassemble genes from long-vanished creatures and resurrect the proteins those genes encode. Their efforts have demonstrated that it is possible to observe physiological processes that took place in animals that have been extinct for thousands of years. The interactive below shows how Campbell and Hofreiter recreated the red blood cell protein hemoglobin from a woolly mammoth and then observed how that protein functioned, revealing a key adaptation to cold climate.

Angie's List: Home Improvement Tips ? CBS Philly

By Jim Donovan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Home improvement season is in full swing. Many general contractors and companies hire subcontractors for large remodeling projects or specifically for electrical work or plumbing. But if you?re not careful, that home remodeling job can take a turn for the worst. In this week?s Angie?s List report, Jim Donovan explains why it?s key you do your homework when it comes to subcontractors.

Whether your adding an addition, remodeling your kitchen or renovating part of your home sometimes the contractor you hire will call on others for help.

?In a large project it?s not unusual for a contractor to hire subcontractors who specialize in certain trades whether it be a plumber, electrician, even a roofers. But it?s important for you as the consumer to know who they are hiring check them out as well,? said Angie?s List founder, Angie Hicks.

So ask for a list of subcontractors your contractor might use. Ask friends or family about them and check online reviews.

And if you?re doing a big job, talk to the general contractor about a lien waver.

That?s basically going to protect you against the contractor not paying the subcontractor because if the contractor doesn?t pay his subs, they could potentially put a lien against your property. If the contractor refuses to have a lien waver it?s a red flag and you should walk away,? said Hicks.

More from Angie:

Types of Contractors

? General Contractor (GC): Type of manager who is in charge of overseeing the entirety of a project. For a home remodeling job, the GC will meet with the homeowner to go over the initial project details, estimate the cost of the project, draft a contract, hire workers and handle the daily operation of the job. General contractor usually don?t perform any of the labor, but instead hire skilled tradesmen as subcontractors.

? Subcontractor: A worker who is hired by a general contractor to perform the obligations of another contractor?s contract. Also referred to as specialty contractors or ?subs,? subcontractors are typically hired to perform a specialized type of labor. They are the plumbers, roofers, carpet installers and electricians who are essential to any large remodeling project. As the name implies, subcontractors work under contract with, and get paid by general contractors.

A nationwide Angie?s List poll found:

? When asked what aspects of the hiring process or contract were important ? 10 percent of the respondent said lien wavers.

What is a lien waver?

If a home improvement contractor fails to pay his employees or fails to pay for the building materials used in the project, a lien can be placed on your property and you, the property owner, can be held liable for the unpaid expenses if a lien waiver was not established.

? To avoid unexpected fees or liens, homeowners should consider always including a lien waiver or lien waiver clause in the project?s contract. With a lien waiver, when the project is successfully completed, both parties sign off and state that the contract obligations have been met, including the general contractor making all necessary payments to materials suppliers, subcontractors or vendors.

? If the general contractor doesn?t agree to sign off on the lien waiver, you can withhold payment until he or she has proved they?ve paid their suppliers or subcontractors.

? One of the most essential things to know about liens and lien releases is how they?re enforced in your area. Although the general principle is the same for most areas, each state or municipality has different standards for the application of liens and their releases.

Angie?s List Tips: Know your subcontractors

? Ask your general contractor for a list of subcontractors to be used on a project, and then check the subs out.

? Angie?s List recommends soliciting at least three bids, properly vetting contractors and subcontractors by checking references and verifying licensure (if applicable), bonding and insurance, and negotiating a detailed contract.

? Ask the contractor how long he/she has worked with the subcontractors. What is their experience working together?

? Insist on a lien waiver, which protects the homeowner from liability if the general contractor fails to pay the subcontractors.

A PARTY AT THE HOUSE OF MOON - Speedhunters

While a good part of the global Speedhunters team was gathered at Gatebil last weekend covering all of the madness that event brings, I ended up having quite a busy weekend myself here in California. Besides the Cars & Coffee coverage you saw earlier in the week, I also shot a couple car features as well as a shop visit ? all of which you?ll be seeing in the coming weeks. Prior to hopping on the road to head home I made one final stop, and that was at Mooneyes USA in Santa Fe Springs where their annual open house was going down.

No matter what side of the Pacific they are on, the Mooneyes family certainly knows how to throw a party. I visited the open house and last summer and found it to be one of the most laid back and enjoyable events of the year. Needless to say, I added it once more to my schedule for this month.

I knew I?d reached my destination once I saw the the dozens of Hot Rods and customs that lined Norwalk Boulevard outside the iconic yellow Mooneyes USA shop. Since there was no set schedule for the open house, the cars were rolling in and out throughout the day. There were actually a few other Hot Rod shows happening in LA on the same day so many people would come through on their way to or from those other events.

One of the things I noticed is that the increase in vintage Japanese vehicles that are taking part in Mooneyes-hosted events. These cars and trucks are a big part of events like the Street Car Nationals or Hot Rod Custom Show in Japan, and it?s nice to see them add some flavor to the US-based Mooneyes events.

You probably remember this SR20-powered Datsun 620 from the spotlight I ran on it last year. Definitely one of the most well exectued mini-trucks I have ever seen.

There were a few featured guest cars that came out to be part of the festivities, like the ?Psycotic Reaction? altered wheelbase Nova. This is another one those occasions where I wish these photos could have sound clips attached to them?

The open house makes for a fine opportunity to do some shopping in the Mooneyes USA retail store?

?as well as to get a behind the scenes look at the historic Mooneyes manufacturing facility. There?s really a sense of history in here that you don?t find in too many other speed shops. For more on this history, make sure you check out my feature from the Dean Moon exhibit at the NHRA Museum.

Ready for Bonneville? This reminds me that I need to start preparing for my first ever visit to the salt next month?

One of the biggest draws at the Mooneyes open house are the world famous ?Chico?s Burgers?, which are served up around lunch time free of charge. This is a company that takes care of its customers and fans.

Hmm?I?m not quite sure if that license plate is correct.

The parking lots around Mooneyes USA are completely full of custom cars, and that?s where I found this bitchin? two-tone Merc?

?and this very fresh looking mild custom Chevy hardtop.

When it comes to aesthetic appeal of engines, there really is nothing better than an early V8 equipped with period correct speed parts. Sure there are more powerful or more exotic powerplants out there ? but in terms of beauty this is on the top for me.

No grill, no problem.

While the 1964 model might be the most famous of the Impalas, I?m quite partial to the ?65 and ?66 models myself. This example was looking just right dropped over a set of Astro Supremes with skinny white walls. Oh how I?d love to have one sitting in my garage some day.

Another one of the non-American machines that was taking part in the action was this slightly boro AE86 coupe with a Levin front end conversion. Nothing wrong with a little battle damage, right?

Another solid use of the aforementioned Astro Supremes, this time on a bagged Chevy Pickup.

Our buddy Lloyd also brought out his mega low first generation Toyota Cressida. This is another cool car you can expect to see a full feature on in the coming weeks.

People may have come to the Mooneyes open house with plans to pick up some car parts or maybe a t-shirt. I?m not sure how many came out with plans to bring home a new project car?

This Squareback with a set of Porsche wheels was the only Volkswagens I recall seeing while I was there. It would definitley be cool to see the US-branch of Mooneyes be as involved in the VW scene as their Japanese counterparts.

There were, however, plenty of lead sleds and other lowdown customs to go around.

This slammed Lexus GS is a lead sled of a slightly different type.

The same goes for this IS300 that was parked right next to it. Hey, it?s definitley the right color for a Mooneyes event!

In any other part of the world a car with no top whatsoever might be a bit of an inconvenience, but in Southern California it?s really no big deal.

There really isn?t a more cost effective way to add a cool custom look to your vehicle than with a set of stainless steel Moon Discs. Case in point, this dropped Toyota mini-truck.

I was going through some old photographs the other day when I found some photos of the Mooneyes Nova I shot in Japan back in 2008. Here?s the same car looking quite at home under the Southern California sun.

There are really few cars in the world that have more street presence than a Plymouth Superbird. It?s one thing to see a photograph of one, but to see one these winged beasts cruising down the street is quite special.

As I was going about my business I heard the distinct whine of a supercharger and I looked up just in time to catch to catch this blown ?62 Chevy cruise by on Norwalk Boulevard. Yep, ?badass? is the only word to use in this situation.

A great setting, great weather, and great cars.? That?s another fantastic Mooneyes event in the books.

Until next time!

-Mike
