Benghazi attack: Urgent call for military help ?was denied by chain of command?

Citing ?sources who were on the ground? in Benghazi, Libya, Fox News is reporting that an urgent request for military help during last month?s terrorist attack on the US consulate there ?was denied by the CIA chain of command.?

The attack, on the anniversary of 9/11, killed US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three embassy personnel, including two former Navy SEALs working as security contractors.

Among other things reported in some detail, Fox asserts that a Special Operations team had been moved to US military facilities in Sigonella, Italy ? approximately two hours away ? but were never told to deploy.

?The fighting at the CIA annex [in Benghazi] went on for more than four hours ? enough time for any planes based in Sigonella Air base, just 480 miles away, to arrive. Fox News has also learned that two separate Tier One Special operations forces were told to wait, among them Delta Force operators.?

Think you know the Middle East? Take our geography quiz.

This latest report comes as the Obama administration continues to fend off criticism that it misunderstood (or deliberately misled in its public statements) what was happening in Benghazi, including the extent to which al Qaeda or its affiliates were involved in the attack.

Writing last week in the conservative National Review online, former Marine Corps officer and Reagan administration senior Pentagon official Francis ?Bing? West outlined much the same scenario as Fox News, including a timeline of events in Benghazi.

?Fighter jets could have been at Benghazi in an hour; the commandos inside three hours,? Mr. West wrote. ?If the attackers were a mob, as intelligence reported, then an F-18 [Navy fighter jet] in afterburner, roaring like a lion, would unnerve them. This procedure was applied often in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Conversely, if the attackers were terrorists, then the U.S. commandos would eliminate them. But no forces were dispatched from Sigonella.?

?For our top leadership, with all the technological and military tools at their disposal, to have done nothing for seven hours was a joint civilian and military failure of initiative and nerve,? writes West, a Vietnam combat veteran who has reported extensively on US combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. ?Secretary of State Clinton has said the responsibility was hers. But there has been no assertion that the State Department overruled the Pentagon out of concern about the sovereignty of Libyan air space. Instead, it appears passive groupthink prevailed, with the assumption being that a spontaneous mob would quickly run out of steam.?

CIA and Obama administration officials have been quick to rebut such critical news reports.

CIA spokeswoman Jennifer Youngblood denied to Fox the claims that requests for support were turned down.

"We can say with confidence that the Agency reacted quickly to aid our colleagues during that terrible evening in Benghazi," she said. "Moreover, no one at any level in the CIA told anybody not to help those in need; claims to the contrary are simply inaccurate. In fact, it is important to remember how many lives were saved by courageous Americans who put their own safety at risk that night ? and that some of those selfless Americans gave their lives in the effort to rescue their comrades."

At a press conference this week, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said the US military did not quickly intervene during the attack because military leaders did not have adequate intelligence information and felt they should not put American forces at risk, reports the Associated Press.

"The basic principle is that you don't deploy forces into harm's way without knowing what's going on; without having some real-time information about what's taking place," Mr. Panetta told Pentagon reporters. "And as a result of not having that kind of information, the commander who was on the ground in that area, Gen. Ham, Gen. Dempsey and I felt very strongly that we could not put forces at risk in that situation."

Panetta was referring to Gen. Carter Ham, the head of US Africa Command, and Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress are pressing their case for more information.

In a letter to President Obama Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner questioned whether the White House considered military options during or immediately after the attack, and he questioned what the president knew about the security threats in the country. He said that the national debate over the incident shows that Americans are concerned and frustrated about the administration's response to the attack.

"Can you explain what options were presented to you or your staff, and why it appears assets were not allowed to be pre-positioned, let alone utilized? If these reports are accurate, the artificial constraint on the range of options at your disposal would be deeply troubling," Rep. Boehner wrote.

Bailed-out Portugal raises $2.4B in debt auction

LISBON, Portugal (AP) ? Portugal managed to raise ?1.85 billion ($2.4 billion) in a debt auction Wednesday despite the country's bleak economic prospects and growing political tension over austerity policies.

The Public Debt Agency said it sold 3-, 6- and 12-month Treasury bills, with interest rates on the shortest and longest bills sharply lower though the 6-month rate was up on the last auction.

The coalition government forecasts a third straight year of recession next year, predicting a 1 percent economic contraction, but its draft budget for 2013 compounds the austerity program with steep tax increases that would cost many workers the equivalent of at least a month's pay and likely further stifle consumption. The jobless rate, already at a record 15.9 percent, is seen rising to 16.4 percent next year.

A broad outcry over the budget proposal has strained relations between the senior and junior parties in the center-right coalition, respectively the Social Democratic Party and the Popular Party.

The Social Democrats insisted their governing partner endorsed the budget plan. But the Popular Party's vice president, Jose Manuel Rodrigues, said his party's members of government didn't give their blessing to the tax hikes and would try to change them during discussions in Parliament ahead of a vote later this month. Without its partner, the Social Democratic Party doesn't have enough votes to approve its proposal.

Portugal was close to bankruptcy when it was engulfed by the eurozone's financial crisis and asked for a ?78 billion rescue last year following a decade of feeble growth and mounting debt.

To get the bailout money, which is delivered in batches, Portugal must abide by promised deficit cuts and economic reforms.

Finance Minister Vitor Gaspar said earlier this week his budget proposal was necessary to cut the deficit to its 4.5 percent target in 2013. In 2010 the deficit was 10.1 percent.

In the bond auction, the debt agency said there was demand for eight times the amount of 3-month bills offered. It sold ?250 million of those bills at a rate of 1.366 percent ? down from the 3.845 percent in a similar sale in February.

The rate on the 12-month bills also fell, to 2.101 percent from 3.5 percent in July, and the agency sold ?770 million of those bills.

The 6-month bills sold at a rate of 1.839 percent for ?830 million. That was up from the 1.7 percent Portugal paid last month.

"There was no negative impact from the current political and budget circumstances," said Filipe Silva, debt manager of Lisbon-based financial group Banco Carregosa. He attributed the mostly lower rates to the possibility of European Central Bank help for debt-heavy eurozone countries, which has recently helped drive down loan rates for Spain and Italy.

The interest rate Portugal pays on its 10-year bonds, viewed as a benchmark of investor confidence, has fallen over this year. The rate was around 8 percent Wednesday, down from more than 17 percent in January.

Karadzic denies Bosnia war crimes as he starts defense

THE HAGUE (Reuters) - Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic, accused of some of the worst atrocities in Europe since World War Two, told judges he should be praised for promoting peace, not charged with war crimes, an assertion hotly denied by victims watching the trial.

Beginning his defense, Karadzic accused Bosnian Muslims of deliberately staging some of the atrocities against their own people to win international support, drawing gasps of disbelief from Muslim survivors in the gallery of the court on Tuesday.

Karadzic is one of three Serb leaders brought to trial in The Hague for war crimes during the violent break-up of multi-ethnic Yugoslavia between 1991 and 1999, in which more than 100,000 people were killed and millions were displaced.

Now 67 and still recognizable by his shock of white hair, he is defending against himself charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, and cross-examined witnesses himself.

Looking resigned but relaxed and reading from a pre-written speech, he said Muslims had faked the circumstances of two shellings of a marketplace in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo during a siege by Serb forces. More than 100 people were killed.

"Sarajevo is my city, and any story that we would shell Sarajevo without any reason is untrue," he said, reiterating long-standing allegations by the Serb side which have already been refuted by the Hague tribunal in an earlier case.

Prosecutors at the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia say Karadzic was jointly responsible for the shelling of Sarajevo when Bosnian Serb forces besieged it from 1992-6.

He is also charged with being behind the massacre of 8,000 Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica in 1995.

"Instead of being accused, I should have been rewarded for all the good things I have done," he told the court. "I did everything in human power to avoid the war. I succeeded in reducing the suffering of all civilians."

Some of the victims expressed disgust at his words.

"It is difficult to even describe how I felt when I heard him saying this," Kada Hotic, who lost 56 male family members in Srebrenica, told Reuters in Sarajevo.

"I lost so many family members only because they were Muslims in a territory that Karadzic desired to turn into exclusively Serb land. Is that peacemaking?" she said.

MARKET SHELLING

Karadzic said two separate shellings of a Sarajevo market place, in February 1994 and August 1995, in which a total of 105 people were killed and 234 injured, had been orchestrated.

During the trial of Dragomir Milosevic, chief of staff to the commander of the forces besieging Sarajevo, the court found Bosnian Serb forces were responsible for the 1995 shelling.

Karadzic also said a famous press photograph of an emaciated man standing behind barbed wire in what was apparently a concentration camp had been staged.

Fikret Alic, the detainee who appeared in that picture, was watching Karadzic's statements from the gallery on Tuesday.

"It was a humiliation for me that even today he is maintaining that this story was made up," he said.

Tribunal judges established in the trial of local leader Milomir Stakic, who was sentenced to 40 years' imprisonment, that detainees were beaten and tortured in camps including Trnopolje, where Alic was detained.

"This trial has turned into a mockery of both the court and the victims," said Zumra Sehomerovic, who lost her husband and son at Srebrenica.

Karadzic was warned by a judge that reading lengthy summaries of witness depositions would eat into the 300 hours he had been allocated to defend himself.

HARD TO HIDE

The tribunal has indicted Croats, Muslims, Serbs and Albanians on charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in the former Yugoslavia.

The majority were ethnic Serbs, including the former head of state, army chief of staff, defense minister and speaker of the parliament, and many Serbs consider the tribunal to be biased.

For years, it had seemed the main war crimes suspects would stay out of the tribunal's reach, until political changes in the region made it more difficult for them to hide.

A former psychiatrist, Karadzic was arrested in 2008 in Belgrade, where he had been living in disguise as a new age health guru.

Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic went on trial in The Hague this year, after 16 years on the run. Former Yugoslav and Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic died in 2006 before the end of his trial.

As Karadzic opened his defense, the tribunal also began the separate trial of its last suspect, the final chapter for an institution that has broken new ground in the investigation of conflicts and paved the way for a permanent war crimes court.

Goran Hadzic, the last of 161 suspects still alive and at large after the Yugoslav wars, is accused of murder, torture and forcible deportation at the very outset of those wars.

Prosecutors say Hadzic, president of the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina from 1992-94, was responsible for killings and forced deportations of minority ethnic Croats from the region after Croatia broke away from Yugoslavia in 1991.

Already sentenced in his absence to a total of 40 years in prison by Croatian courts in the mid-1990s, Hadzic was finally detained by Serbian authorities in 2011.

Madagascar 3: Europe?s Most Wanted (Blu-ray) Criticize This! Pick of the Week ? As a parent of a 5-year-old son I?ve watched a lot of animated films over the last few years. Some, such as Animals United or Open Season, get one or two viewings before being forgotten for good. A select few, however, get watched over and over again. Some of these include Cars, Rango, and the Madagascar films. And while I know the kid loves them, I personally find Madagascar and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa both very entertaining films that are just as much for adults as they are for kids. Madagascar 3: Europe?s Most Wanted continues this trend and is the best of the bunch when it comes to the fun factor. Even after seeing it once in the theatre and a few times at home already, the film continues to please not only my son, but the whole family. Featuring the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Schwimmer, and Martin Short. The Blu-ray features an outstanding 1080p image that truly highlights the gorgeous animation. The 7.1 Dolby TrueHD surround mix is also spectacular and will give your home theatre a nice workout. Special features include deleted scenes, audio commentary with directors Eric Darnell, Tom McGrath, and Conrad Vernon, a roundtable interview with some of the actors, a trivia track, and more. A regular DVD and digital copy are also included. Film **** Blu-ray **** (out of 5 stars).

Moonrise Kingdom (Blu-ray) ? I was highly anticipating Wes Anderson?s Moonrise Kingdom and expected to fully love it. And while there is much to like about it, compared to Rushmore or The Royal Tenenbaums, two of my favourite Anderson films, it doesn?t come close to being as good or memorable. The film follows two young lovers as they run away together causing everyone in the small New England town they live to panic. It?s a quirky story that gets old fast, but thanks to some great performances from newcomers Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman, as well as Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, and Frances McDormand, the film is very watchable and if you?re an Anderson fan you?ll most likely get something out of it. Whether I?d ever watch it again is something I can?t imagine happening though. The Blu-ray looks and sounds great, but is not required viewing. Special features include a set tour with Bill Murray, making-of featurettes, and more. A regular DVD is also included. Film *** Blu-ray *** (out of 5 stars).

The Santa Clause Trilogy (Blu-ray) ? I don?t remember hearing anyone ever say ?When will The Santa Clause trilogy be out on Blu-ray?? I guess there was some demand for it as Disney has put together a nice little box set of the three ridiculous films. Don?t get me wrong, I actually enjoy the first two films. Yeah, they?re juvenile and Tim Allen gets a bit annoying at times, but they succeed at putting me in the Christmas spirit and are decent, family-oriented flicks. The third is something else altogether as it adds Jack Frost (Martin Short) and just becomes extremely stupid and irritating (and might be the reason they ended the series after it). So, yeah, the box set is nice and the films all look and sound great on Blu-ray. Not something you need to run out and buy, but if you don?t own them and want them on your shelf, you might as well pick this set up in time for Christmas. Each film is loaded with multiple special features to keep you busy all winter long. Box set *** (out of 5 stars).

Chernobyl Diaries (Blu-ray) ? My tolerance for shaky-cam horror movies is pretty high and I?ll give most a fair chance. Chernobyl Diaries was just a downright waste of time and space and all copies should be dumped in nuclear waste and wiped from the face of the Earth for good. Avoid this film at all cost and you?ll be better off for it. Releasing this junk on Blu-ray is even more useless than making the film in the first place. Special features include an alternate ending, additional scene, and more. A regular DVD and digital copy are included as well. Film * Blu-ray * (out of 5 stars).

Also available to Watch @ Home this week is?That?s My Boy, starring Adam Sandler, Red Lights, starring Cillian Murphy, Robert De Niro, and Sigourney Weaver, and Pete?s Dragon comes to Blu-ray for the first time.

Fort Mill Scouts, church team up to stop hunger

FORT MILL --?

A couple of really good popcorn-selling years, a small surplus of funds, a group of dedicated Boy Scouts and the local church who loves them turned into a recipe for success last week at Grace Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill.

Cub Scout Pack 250, Boy Scout Troop 250 and Venturing Crew 250 teamed up Oct. 8 with the Global Missions Team and congregation of Grace Presbyterian and the humanitarian organization Stop Hunger Now to prepare 12,000 meals for people in need.

?It?s a great educational opportunity and a mission opportunity to do something with a global impact locally. We thought it would be a unique opportunity for the congregation and the Scout units to interact a little bit,? said mission team member and Scout liaison Ray Scott.

Grace Presbyterian is home to a congregation of about 400. The church charters several Scouting groups comprised of roughly 225 students and more than 75 adults.

Scouts and congregation members lined up assembly-line style and measured, mixed, weighed and sealed bags of food. The smallest Scouts counted finished product and pushed the bags into shipping boxes. Older Scouts refilled bins from 100-pound bags of rice and loaded finished cases into the truck that would take them to Stop Hunger Now?s south Charlotte warehouse, where they will be shipped worldwide as needed for crisis relief and school feeding programs.

By providing a hot meal to children at school, school feeding programs give impoverished parents an additional incentive to send their children to school. Stop Hunger Now hopes that supporting education through feeding programs will help break the cycle of poverty for these families.

Troop treasurer and committee member Paul Smith is credited with the original idea for the food packing project at Grace Presbyterian.

?I?ve done it before in other places. We enjoyed it. It?s something all ages can do, and it?s a lot of fun. You can have fun and help people at the same time,? he said.

Fort Mill resident Mark Barnes recently began working for Stop Hunger Now and helped to coordinate the packing event Monday evening, bringing family members along to volunteer as well. Barnes estimates that one billion of the planet?s seven billion residents suffer from hunger, and 25,000 die daily due to hunger-related causes.

?We?re going to do some significant damage today in the war against poverty and the war against hunger,? he said.

Stop Hunger Now is an international relief organization founded in 1998 in Raleigh, N.C., with offices and a warehouse in south Charlotte. The organization coordinates volunteer groups to raise funds ? approximately 25 cents per meal ? and assemble shelf-stable, easily transportable food packages for use in school feeding programs and crisis relief in the United States and internationally.

Each food package serves six and consists of a vitamin and mineral-fortified flavoring mix along with dehydrated rice, soy and vegetables. More than 250,000 volunteers have assembled over 30 million meals since Stop Hunger Now?s meal packaging program began in 2005.

Barnes says Stop Hunger Now is averaging three to four food packing events weekly, resulting in nearly 10 container loads of food being shipped annually from the organization?s south Charlotte warehouse.

Making a layer cake with atomic precision

Monday, October 15, 2012

In a report published in Nature Physics, a group led Dr Leonid Ponomarenko and Nobel prize-winner Professor Andre Geim has assembled individual atomic layers on top of each other in a desired sequence.

The team used individual one-atom-thick crystals to construct a multilayer cake that works as a nanoscale electric transformer.

Graphene, isolated for the first time at The University of Manchester in 2004, has the potential to revolutionise diverse applications from smartphones and ultrafast broadband to drug delivery and computer chips.

It has the potential to replace existing materials, such as silicon, but the Manchester researchers believe it could truly find its place with new devices and materials yet to be invented.

In the nanoscale transformer, electrons moving in one metallic layer pull electrons in the second metallic layer by using their local electric fields. To operate on this principle, the metallic layers need to be insulated electrically from each other but separated by no more than a few interatomic distances, a giant leap from the existing nanotechnologies.

These new structures could pave the way for a new range of complex and detailed electronic and photonic devices which no other existing material could make, which include various novel architectures for transistors and detectors.

The scientists used graphene as a one-atom-thick conductive plane while just four atomic layers of boron nitride served as an electrical insulator.

The researchers started with extracting individual atomic planes from bulk graphite and boron nitride by using the same technique that led to the Nobel Prize for graphene, a single atomic layer of carbon. Then, they used advanced nanotechnology to mechanically assemble the crystallites one by one, in a Lego style, into a crystal with the desired sequence of planes.

The nano-transformer was assembled by Dr Roman Gorbachev, of The University of Manchester, who described the required skills. He said: "Every Russian and many in the West know The Tale of the Clockwork Steel Flea.

"It could only be seen through the most powerful microscope but still danced and even had tiny horseshoes. Our atomic-scale Lego perhaps is the next step of craftsmanship".

Professor Geim added: "The work proves that complex devices with various functionalities can be constructed plane by plane with atomic precision.

"There is a whole library of atomically-thin materials. By combining them, it is possible to create principally new materials that don't exist in nature. This avenue promises to become even more exciting than graphene itself."

Dubious Sony 'Nexus X' photos appear online

Android Central

Update: Sources tell Android Central that these images are not of a genuine Nexus device.

The photo above is one of a pair of pictures doing the rounds this morning, claiming to show a future Sony-built Nexus phone. The images appeared on Picasa today, tagged as "Nexus X" and "Xperia Nexus." EXIF information shows the photos were taken on a Galaxy Nexus on Oct. 13 and 14. The front face shows no branding whatsoever, while Google and Sony logos adorn the rear. Along the side can be seen three gold pogo pins and a microUSB port.

Eagle-eyed readers will notice a few anomalies with the image above, and the photo of the front face, which we've included after the break. First up is the odd bulge around the back of the device, and the strangely faded Sony logo. There's also some odd artefacting throughout the photo, particularly around the USB port and the Google logo up top -- hallmarks of possible Photoshopping. Then there's the fact that the front face shows a home screen where the Google Play Store icon is not labeled, and there's no persistent search bar up top. If you ask us, there's definitely something fishy going on here.

And then there's the fact that we're pretty sure the LG Nexus 4 is what's next from Google, and that Googlers are currently testing that model rather than any Sony creation.

In any case, let's suspend disbelief for a few minutes and entertain the idea that this is genuine. If so, we'd guess it's either an abandoned prototype or some future Sony phone in a dummy case. Certainly, the exterior doesn't match any Sony phone we're familiar with, though it does share a few design traits with the Xperia S and Xperia Ion. We know from briefings with Sony and other manufacturers that they often produce numerous prototype designs for future hardware, so it's possible that's what we're dealing with here. We also wouldn't read too much into the fact that it's running vanilla Android, as manufacturers must use this as a starting point when building their own UIs.

In any case, we'd suggest you don't get too excited about what we're seeing here. It's not impossible that we might see a Sony Nexus at some point in the future, but if we do, we're pretty sure it won't look anything like this.

Check past the break for the second, equally suspicious photo in this set.

Scott Lowe Explains Basics of SDN for CIOs on Wikibon ...

Software defined networks, (SDN) also known as network virtualization, is a bleeding edge technology that jumped into prominence in the industry with VMware?s purchase of SDN pioneer Nicira just before VMworld 2012 in September. And while the technology may not be quite ready for real time yet, CIOs are going to be hearing more about SDN, and they want to be ready for that call from the CEO who has just read about the promise of SDN in an airline magazine. Most of the coverage of SDN, however, has been fairly high level and not really what CIOs need.

Wikibon analyst, consultant, and former CIO Scott Lowe has stepped into that gap with a Professional Alert titled ?SDN for the CIO: Introduction to Software Defined Networking? designed to bring the discussion down to a more concrete level.

SDN, he writes, ?brings a new level of abstraction to the physical network? and ?sounds strangely like service virtualization, which is also an abstraction technology.? And the two work well together ? SDN is in part a response to the huge increase in network demand caused by server virtualization. However, he says, SDN is more than the network version of VMs.

A major part of the value of SDN is in its potential to streamline the process of reconfiguring a network to handle new demand. It does this by abstracting the network plane, which in today?s networks resides in the individual switches, to a higher layer, leaving just the data plane in the switch. That allows network administrators to configure large portions or whole networks at once rather than having to touch each switch to make the changes.

This is important, Scott says, because ?data centers have undergone a sea change with regard to how network traffic flows?primarily as the result of virtualization.? Because virtualized workloads constantly shift across the network between servers and even data centers, ?instead of traffic just going in-and-out, it?s going side-to-side, too.?

This forces more frequent reconfiguration of portions of the data network to handle changes in demand. SDN eliminates much of the time and effort involved, allowing network managers to respond faster and more accurately to these changes. More important, it allows network managers to refocus on the needs of each application, essentially creating a separate logical network for each application on top of the unified physical network layer.

SDN is still very much a bleeding edge technology, and while it is capturing increasing amounts of mindshare inside IT, it is not yet ready for prime time and still could fade away. And if it does become the Next Big Thing in the data center, that eventual mature product may or may not be based on OpenFlow, which today, Scott says, is ?the S in SDN.?

Overall Scott writes he would not adopt SDN until the standards have been further refined and the network vendors are fully committed not just to the concept but to a specific standard set. However, CIOs should monitor SDN develop and in particular what their network vendors are doing.

As with all Wikibon research, Scott?s full Alert is available without charge on Wikibon.org. IT professionals are invited to register for free membership in the Wikibon community. This allows them to correct errors in Wikibon published material, leave comments and questions, and contribute their own Alerts, tips, and white papers. Mom who glued toddler's hands: Is she a monster?

The word "Monster" shown on an overhead display that prosecutor Eren Price, not pictured, wrote is shown on a large display in court as a Dallas Sheriffs deputy escorts Elizabeth Escalona, 23, back to her seat in court during the sentencing phase of her trial Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, in Dallas. (AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez)

(AP) ? Elizabeth Escalona has admitted that when she beat her then 2-year-old daughter and glued her hands to a wall, she behaved like a monster.

Where both sides disagree is whether she's a monster now.

Prosecutors and Escalona's attorney, Angie N'Duka, are scheduled to present their closing arguments on her sentencing Friday morning. Escalona, who pleaded guilty to felony injury of a child, faces up to life in prison. Prosecutors want a 45-year sentence.

State District Judge Larry Mitchell will decide Escalona's sentence.

Prosecutor Eren Price has repeatedly described the 23-year-old Escalona as a "monster." Price ripped into Escalona on Thursday, repeatedly calling her a liar and ordering her to look at photos of the injuries she inflicted on her daughter, Jocelyn Cedillo.

In one photo, dozens of red and brown marks from the September 2011 beating covered Jocelyn's back. Price told Escalona to count how many bruises there were. Escalona sobbed for several seconds.

"Ms. Escalona, if you can do it, you can look at it," Price said in a loud, sharp voice.

Police say Escalona kicked her daughter in the stomach, beat her with a milk jug, then stuck her hands to an apartment wall with an adhesive commonly known as Super Glue. Escalona's other children told authorities their mother attacked Jocelyn due to potty training problems.

Jocelyn suffered bleeding in her brain, a fractured rib, bruises and bite marks, and was in a coma for a couple of days. Some skin had been torn off her hands, where doctors also found paint chips from the apartment wall, witnesses testified.

Escalona has admitted she behaved like a monster when she beat Jocelyn but insists she isn't one now.

Price asked Escalona what she thought should happen in the case. Escalona replied in a soft, halting voice: "I should be put away." Then, she added, "But I also think I should be given a second chance."

When Price asked her why, she responded: "Because I'm not a monster."

The toddler's grandmother, Ofelia Escalona, said her daughter "made a mistake. She's not a monster. She needs help." Ofelia Escalona tearfully asked the judge to sentence her daughter to probation, saying she could be "fixed" and needed to work to support her children.

And N'Duka, Escalona's attorney, pointed out repeatedly that Escalona had taken the blame for attacking her daughter.

"She said to you, 'I take full responsibility for what happened,'" N'Duka said in questioning a Dallas Police officer who investigated the case, Senior Cpl. Abel Lopez.

Escalona acknowledged several missteps in her childhood: hanging around with gang members and trying marijuana around the age of 11, assaulting her mother at 12 and getting pregnant with her first child at 14.

She also admitted drinking and doing drugs after she was released from jail on bail in February.

Despite what she described as problems paying rent and other bills, Escalona admitted she was using marijuana about twice a day in the time before she attacked Jocelyn.

Selectmen take cautious funding approach on Ham Rec Complex ...

By Gail Geraghty

Staff Writer

Bridgton Selectmen delayed action on pursuing a major state grant that would help complete work at the Kendal C. and Anna Ham Recreation Complex Tuesday.

The reason?

The $377,000 grant comes with a required 50% match of $188,500, and even though volunteer labor and materials can be applied to the match, selectmen don?t want to commit town funds until they first meet with members of the sports complex?s fundraising arm, the Bridgton Recreation Advancement Group.

Board members Bernie King and Doug Taft were expected to meet Wednesday with BRAG officials on the matter. They want to know how much more money BRAG is planning to raise, beyond the $700,000 they?ve already raised on site preparation, design, field creation and fencing, and what they plan to spend it on.

The conservation department?s Land and Water Fund only pays for projects related directly to enjoyment of the outdoors. Anne Krieg, Bridgton?s Director of Planning, Economic and Community Development, said she and Recreation Director Tom Tash met last month with the Department of Conservation?s Mick Rogers, who told her the town?s best bet was to seek funding for the tennis courts, along with the playground and the walkway. A separate trail grant could be sought for the trail work, she said. The town also must take ownership of the complex before the work could begin.

BRAG President Bill Macdonald has said the nonprofit organization knows it will need to stay active well after the transfer of ownership to raise the estimated $500,000 still needed. Krieg said BRAG cannot apply for the DOC grant; only governmental entities are eligible.

Selectman Woody Woodward said that although volunteer labor and donated materials could be used to offset a good part of the cost of the gravel walkway and playground, only professional contractors can create two regulation-sized paved tennis courts, estimated to cost $225,000. As such, it seems clear that taxpayers would need to fund a good portion of the $188,500 match, he said.

Selectman Chairman Paul Hoyt agreed, saying it especially concerned him that the tennis court construction was part of what BRAG promised when the town agreed to use revenue from the Moose Pond Trust Fund for the project.

Just how ?Business-Friendly? is Bridgton?

Questions resurfaced over just how effective the town has been in marketing itself, as Krieg asked the board?s permission to apply to become an official ?Business Friendly Community? as defined by Maine Gov. Paul Lepage?s office. She said the designation could be used to earn points on grant applications and merely required an application with questions on zoning and other issues showing how easy it is to start a business in Bridgton. Hoyt said he?d like to see a copy of the application.

The discussion came up as the board reviewed a list Krieg prepared at their request of current and future projects and initiatives. Among needs listed under economic development were the ?Business Friendly? application; working with the high school on a work-ready program in collaboration with area businesses; and identifying growth areas in town (through completion of the Comprehensive Plan update) and what types of businesses should be recruited.

?There isn?t very much in here related to local businesses? that exist now, Woodward said. ?I?m concerned there?s not a lot here to promote local businesses. Right now the vast majority of lodging businesses are failing in Bridgton,? he said, while not-too-distant towns like Bethel, Naples and Raymond are actively promoting themselves as destination towns.

Krieg said her office has some funds budgeted for marketing, which could be applied. Ken Murphy, who will be taking over as President of the Greater Bridgton Lake Region Chamber of Commerce in January, took issue with Woodward?s comment that Bridgton might require more than the marketing efforts of a regional chamber serving 13 towns.

?Don?t belittle Bridgton at the expense of other towns,? Murphy said. He said the chamber was actively involved in the recent appearance by former baseball pro-turned cigar maker Luis Tiant at the William Perry Cigar Lounge. Murphy said the wife of the cigar lounge owner had agreed to join the chamber?s board of directors.

Woodward apologized if his comment sounded disrespectful of the chamber, because that was not what he meant. He said the website www.visitbridgton.com he had a part in creating has not been as effective as he had hoped, and suggested that Krieg?s office could become involved.

Marketing matters were again debated when the board discussed promotion of the town-owned Salmon Point Campground on Long Lake. Six new sites have been created, as recommended in the Community Development Committee?s Salmon Point Report.

The board agreed that questions of how much effort and money should be directed toward marketing will be better addressed once they rate their priorities for the upcoming year among a long list prepared by Town Manager Mitch Berkowitz of potential projects that have been discussed, on and off, for some time. Once each board member has rated the projects, Berkowitz will collate the results and deliver a summary at the board?s next regular meeting on Oct. 23.

In other action:

? Bernie King wanted to correct information in last week?s News stating that he was not in favor of the Bridgton Police Department?s practice of both posting mug shots of arrested individuals on its Facebook page and allowing users to make comments underneath. King said, ?I didn?t have a problem with the mug shots, but I do have a problem with the comments.? Selectmen will be discussing and taking action later this month on a draft policy for all forms of electronic communication used by persons appointed, elected and employed by the town.

? The board approved rules governing the operation of the thrift store of donated items at the transfer station. After four weekends of operation by a school group, the store appears to be a success, and other nonprofit groups will be allowed to raise money by staffing the store with volunteers. However, in order to be considered, the group either has to have official 501(c)(3) status as a nonprofit, or be sponsored by one.

? Agreed to new board rules for town committees outlining the minimum requirements for producing a town record of the meeting under the state?s Freedom of Access Law. Even though the letter of the law may be met solely by taping the meeting, the board?s new policy will require a written public record to be distributed to each selectman within four days following the meeting, even if only in draft form. The minutes must include a listing of members and others who attended, each motion made and seconded, and by whom, and the results of each motion. If no vote is taken, a brief account must be provided about the discussion.

Are sites cashing in on your data? Plug-in tells you

3 hrs.

We all know that sites track us across the Internet to some extent, but it's hard to tell which ones do it the most ? and how much they're making from it. A new Web-based tool lets you do just that.

Privacyfix is a new site and browser plug-in for Firefox and Chrome that not only shows you which sites are tracking you and how often, but lets you change your settings right there with a click.

For instance, it told me that Facebook was tracking me on 89 percent (!) of sites ? which isn't that much of a surprise, since the "Like" button doesn't need to be clicked to register your presence on a website. Same for the widgets that tell you which of your friends have liked an article or app.

I hit the 'fix' button, and it indeed?instantly blocked Facebook from tracking me. A little too well, in fact: it broke some sites that used the popular Facebook commenting system.

The process is easy and reversible (all it took was the "undo" button to get Facebook comments back), and if you like what you see, you can install a plug-in that monitors your privacy in real time. Visit a site known for invasive tracking cookies or a?bad privacy policy? PrivacyFix?alerts you and suggests countermeasures.

It also gives a monetary value to how much your data is worth, though that's more of an estimate based on averages and your personal level of use; Google probably doesn't make $563.95 from my searches every year, as shown in the example here,?but I've certainly sent a little their way now and then while shopping online.

The site is a project of PrivacyChoice, a small company that tracks advertising sites and technologies, selling their expertise to companies and making free tools available for users.

There's no substitute for being aware of your own settings, but Privacyfix might be a good way to remind yourself to stay vigilant ? and it might just alert you to a few things you didn't even know needed fixing.

The Best Fitness App

Leslie Horn & Brent Rose

The Best Fitness AppStaying fit is important. Even if it seems enjoyable to lie on the couch devouring hours of HBO Go on your iPad, the truth is, when you're exercising, you're happier?there are plenty of scientific studies to back it up.

The good news: Gadgets can fit in with your gym routine. With the right apps, they can even make it better. We tested out dozens of fitness apps, which can help you train for a marathon, stick to a diet, or do a downward-facing dog pose with the precision of a yogi. If you're serious about getting into shape, here's what you should download first.

Welcome to Fitmodo, Gizmodo's gym for your brain and backbone. Don't suffer through life as a sniveling, sickly weakling?brace up, man, get the blood pumping! Check back on Wednesdays for the latest in fitness science, workout gear, exercise techniques, and enough vim and vigor to whip you into shape.

It must be said that picking a best fitness app is a bit like comparing toasters to badgers. Different apps, created for different purposes, achieve totally different goals. So we're starting the list with a handful of honorable mentions?apps that were very specific, but great for the purpose they serve. After that, we have just the best all around choices?the all time top five desert island fitness apps.

Honorable Mentions

If you diet: "Lose It!"

The Best Fitness App Shedding pounds is hard work, but it's easier when you have a plan and a coach. "Lose It!" helps in both of those departments, crunching the numbers on calorie consumption and tracking how much exercise you're doing. Keep a log of what you're eating, how you're working out, so you can stay on track for your goal weight. Free for Android and iOS.

If you stay loose: "Pocket Yoga"

The Best Fitness App When you start doing yoga, even downward dog is difficult. It requires strength, breathing, focus?and practice. When you can't get to the studio for a class, you can maintain your practice from home with an app that takes you through a full session. Choose from different styles, levels of difficulties, and durations. $3 for Android and iOS.

The Best Fitness App

If you pace your pulse: "Instant Heart Rate" and "Cardiio"

Knowing your heart rate can help you keep in the right zone for fat-burning cardio, and tracking your resting heart rate is a good metric to chart your progress and overall health. Not everybody can afford a fancy heart rate monitor, but it turns out your smartphone has one built in: the camera. Every time your heart beats, there's a subtle change in your skin color, and your phone's camera is sensitive enough to detect it. It's surprisingly accurate! Instant Heart Rate is free for Android; for iOS, Cardiio costs $5.

The Top Five

The Best Fitness App

5th Place: "Workout Trainer"

For some instruction and motivation, Skimble's "Workout Trainer" is rather handy. It has hundreds of workouts to choose from, and you can filter them by how much time you have, what equipment you have access to, what muscle groups you want to work, and your desired intensity level. Photos of each exercise and digitized voices (which are horrible and grating) coach you through the routines.

If you upgrade to a paid subscription (for $3/month or $25/year), the demon voices are swapped out for an actual coach talking you through it. Plus, the photos are replaced with video demonstrations, which are far more useful. Everything syncs with Skimble.com. It's a nicely designed app, but the subscription model is too expensive. For iOS and Android.

The Best Fitness App

4th Place: "JEFIT"

If you're trying to beef up (or build lean muscle), it's important to keep track of your reps, sets, and the weights you're lifting. The gym app "JEFIT" was designed for bodybuilders, who tend to be rather stat-obsessed. The free app has a few pre-designed routines you can follow and edit, or you can make your own from the list of over 500 exercises. Each exercise has an animation and some procedure tips, and they're searchable by what specific muscle you want to work and what equipment you have access to.

It just makes it really easy to log what you did, time your rest between sets, and sync your data with JEFIT.com. The app interface is pretty spartan, but it serves its purpose. Free and $5 pro versions, both on iOS and Android.

The Best Fitness App

3rd Place: "Endomondo"

Endomondo is a great looking, feature-loaded app for outdoor exercise. It can track you while you're doing just about anything, from running and cycling to swimming and windsurfing (somehow). You can find popular routes near you, challenge your friends, or join their teams. The app can connect to heart rate monitors or cycling cadence devices, and it can import data from a FitBit gadget, or stats from the RunKeeper app among many others.

The UI has some problems, though?the abrasive beeps that mark intervals last way too long, ruining whatever music you're listening to. It's supposed to pause when you stop (at a red light, or to tie your shoes), but that doesn't work well, and sometimes it thinks you're stopped even when you're running. The website's interface is generally nice, but when looking at your charts, it doesn't reflect what program you were doing, so it's not as easy to track progress as it could be.

Overall, though, it's a nice app. There are lots of options in the free version, and you can upgrade to Pro for $5 to add interval programs, personal best challenges, and calorie goals. Available for iOS and Android.

The Best Fitness App

2nd Place: "Nike Training Club"

Circuit training is a really good way to kick your butt into gear. A circuit is basically a variety of pre-determined workouts that you can do independent of one another depending on which areas you want to work out.

That's the idea behind the dozens of options in "Nike Training Club." Videos explain just what mountain climbers, hip lifts, or any of the other exercises are, so there's less of a chance of you completely screwing up your form. And even if you're new to circuit training, you don't need to be intimidated. You can pick routines from three levels?beginner, intermediate, and expert.

It's great because sometimes your exercise routine gets stale, which is boring, and it can impact your results. At those times, you need a little inspiration to change things up, and NTC gives you just that. Free, but currently only for iOS.

The Best Fitness App

BESTMODO: RunKeeper

Some of us are awful runners. Like, 10-minute mile bad. But "RunKeeper" is a fantastic motivator. It records stats for every run you complete, then lets you compare your pace from day to day. You can set long-term goals. To make sure you stay on track, a reassuring voice cuts in every five minutes to read back your pace and distance.

But beyond the basics, it's just really adaptable to a lot of different types of workouts. Customizable training plans let you focus your progress on going longer distances, or making better times. You can focus solely on improving your heart rate, as it can connect to a Bluetooth heart rate monitor, and provide coaching just on that statistic. It can import activity from Fitbit, and can be set to track your speeds as you cycle, swim, or even rollerblade (and, yes, rollerblading totally counts as exercise).

What makes this the single the best app?besides its intuitive interface and near-universal integration?is the way it's equally valuable to a veteran runner or someone just getting started. You can follow a pre-determined routine for close guidance, or you can simply say, "I want to run 5 miles," and off you go?with a coach guiding you the whole way. Free for Android and iOS.

There are literally hundreds of other fitness apps. What favorites did we miss?

Is Your Broker an Insurance Agent or a Risk Management Professional?

Written on October 11, 2012 ? 7:29 am | by Christopher Pobieglo |

My most recent business risk management article asks, ?Is Your Broker an Insurance Agent or a Risk Management Professional??

The answer can be very important, but it?s rare the businessperson who has recognized the difference:

?For many business owners, who dedicate their time towards managing and operating their business, there is no difference and any suggestion there is, amounts to splitting hairs.? They have better things to spend their time worrying about whether their broker is an ?insurance agent? or a ?risk management professional.?? But it?s more than just a title, it?s the core approach taken by your representative and the differences for your business can be dramatic.?

<strong>"Body of Proof," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Body of Proof" has been falling below its timeslot competitor, CBS's "Unforgettable," but it still draws a decent audience and its fans are very vocal. ABC has decided it deserves a third season.

  • "Castle"

<strong>"Castle," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show's ratings have definitely suffered without "Dancing With the Stars" airing beforehand, but it is a consistent performer. And now that Castle and Beckett's relationship is evolving, a fifth season of "oh yes they will" is a no-brainer.

  • "Charlie's Angels"

<strong>"Charlie's Angels," ABC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Not really a shock for anybody, but "Charlie's Angels" is cooked. Flimsy story, bad remake, questionable casting.

  • "Cougar Town"

<strong>"Cougar Town," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed -- for TBS!<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The Season 3 ratings weren't boosted much by holding this show until midseason, but ABC's wonky air schedule also didn't help ... which is why the news that TBS has picked up the show for a fourth season is huge. Cheers with your Big Carl!

  • "Dancing With the Stars"

<strong>"Dancing With the Stars," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "DWTS" may have lost its luster in the ratings, but if the viewers are still coming.

<strong>"Desperate Housewives," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> After countless deaths, murders, betrayals and natural disasters on Wisteria Lane over the show's eight seasons, the ladies of "Desperate Housewives" will say goodbye forever this May.

  • "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition"

<strong>"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> After a whopping nine seasons, the do-gooding show came to an end in January. But worry not, it will continue to have a few specials to make viewers cry tears of joy.

  • "GCB"

<strong>"GCB," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This "Desperate Housewives"-esque dramedy premiered to less than 8 million viewers, and the phenomenal cast (Kristin Chenoweth, Annie Potts, Leslie Bibb) couldn't bring in a Texas-sized audience, so ABC canceled it.

  • "Grey's Anatomy"

<strong>"Grey's Anatomy," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Shonda Rhimes' medical drama is a ratings juggernaut, even in its eighth season, and with most of her <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/10/greys-anatomy-ellen-pompeo_n_1506113.html?ref=tv" target="_hplink">big stars signed on for more</a>, ABC gave the go-ahead for a ninth season.

  • "Happy Endings"

<strong>"Happy Endings," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show is way too "ca-yute" to bubble it, and obviously someone high up at ABC agrees. After its first season was moved around and aired all out of order, the network still gave it another chance to find its audience in Season 2 ... and it has, and hopefully will continue to in Season 3.

  • "Last Man Standing"

<strong>"Last Man Standing," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Ratings for Tim Allen's return to sitcoms have been very strong, making it Tuesday's most-watched comedy. If you can beat "Glee" and "The Biggest Loser," a second season is a given.

  • "Man Up!"

    <strong>"Man Up!," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> ABC pulled the show after eight episodes.

  • "The Middle"

<strong>"The Middle," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Now in its third season, "The Middle" is still holding onto its middle position in the ratings on Wednesday nights, and that seems just about right. It doesn't do "American Idol" or "Survivor" numbers, of course, but with over 7 million viewers, it's a strong comedy for the network that easily beats anything NBC is offering.

  • "Missing"

<strong>"Missing," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Ashley Judd lead this drama about a former CIA agent whose son goes missing, kicking her back into action to find him. The series was only set to air 10 episodes, miniseries-style, with the potential for more, but a cancellation means that's all they're getting.

  • "Modern Family"

<strong>"Modern Family," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Modern Family" remains ABC's biggest sitcom success story of the last decade, both in ratings and awards love. This critical darling is getting a fourth season of hijinks with the hilarious Pritchett-Dunphy clan.

  • "Once Upon A Time"

<strong>"Once Upon A Time," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Once Upon a Time" has gotten praise for being one of the more family-friendly dramas on TV, and it's been pulling in close to 10 million viewers each week because of it. We're excited by the almost endless possibilities for new fairy tale-inspired stories to tackle in Season 2.

  • "Pan Am"

<strong>"Pan Am," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Poor "Pan Am" just never quite took off. The series' vintage look actually worked against it, much like NBC's swiftly canceled "Playboy Club" -- guess when you're being compared to award-winning shows like "Mad Men," it makes it more than a little tough to live up to the hype.

  • "Private Practice"

<strong>"Private Practice," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Private Practice" has never gotten "Grey's Anatomy"-level ratings, and things got shakier when ABC bumped it to Tuesday nights to make room for creator Shonda Rhimes' <em>other</em> new show, "Scandal," but they've given the show a sixth season order.

  • "Revenge"

<strong>"Revenge," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> With a clever mix of drama, mystery and serious revenge-ing, this is hands down one of the most addictive new shows on TV, and we can't wait to see where they take things in Season 2.

  • "The River"

<strong>"The River," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The promise of "Paranormal Activity"-like scares each week quickly fizzled after this show premiered, along with the ratings. The first season's eight episodes came and went, and ABC has nixed any plans for more.

  • "Scandal"

<strong>"Scandal," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Shonda Rhimes' latest show isn't about doctors at all -- and that's why we're glad it's sticking around. Kerry Washington is amazing as Olivia Pope, a Washington, D.C. fixer with a crack team of specialists helping make bad headlines vanish before they're ever written. Here's hoping for more than seven episodes in its second season.

  • "Shark Tank"

<strong>"Shark Tank," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Now in its third season, this reality competition show is unlike any other on network TV and ABC is keeping it around for more for that very reason.

  • "Suburgatory"

<strong>"Suburgatory," ABC</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> It's smart, quick and not too cute -- "Suburgatory" is consistently named the sitcom you should be watching, but probably aren't. The great cast makes this one a no-brainer, and the ratings have stayed pretty consistent, too. We're thrilled it's getting a second season to shine!

  • "Work It"

    <strong>"Work It," ABC</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Let us count the ways ...

  • "2 Broke Girls"

<strong>"2 Broke Girls," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>At first, people balked at the racist supporting characters, but now it seems that audiences are all over "2 Broke Girls" -- it's ratings have seen a steady increase, and it won the People's Choice Award for Favorite New Comedy.

  • "A Gifted Man"

<strong>"A Gifted Man," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why: </strong>"A Gifted Man's" total viewer numbers were OK for a Friday night, but a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic is especially bad for CBS. Another bad sign: star Patrick Wilson tweeted about the end: "I had a great time. Thanks to my fans. So happy it's done." And done it is.

  • "The Amazing Race"

<strong>"The Amazing Race," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Voted the best reality show on TV several times (albeit years ago), "The Amazing Race" isn't going anywhere. Ratings have dropped a bit, but are still solid.

  • "The Big Bang Theory"

<strong>"The Big Bang Theory," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Nothing seems to be able to make a dent in this show. With fantastic ratings (it beat "Idol"!) and a rabid following, we'll be seeing plenty more "Big Bang" before its run is over.

  • "Blue Bloods"

<strong>"Blue Bloods," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed <br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The anchor of Friday nights on CBS, "Blue Bloods" has performed well, pulling in around 11 million viewers an episode. The show might not have the youngest audience, but it's still enough for CBS to keep it on the schedule.

  • "Criminal Minds"

<strong>"Criminal Minds," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Paget Brewster might be checking out, but "Criminal Minds" is here to stay. In Season 7, the procedural is still a consistently strong ratings performer for CBS.

  • "CSI"

<strong>"CSI," CBS</strong> <br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Whenever the time comes, the "CSI" mothership will end with a lot of fanfare, but not this year. With new faces Ted Danson and Elisabeth Shue around, there is going to be at least one more season.<br />

  • "CSI: Miami"

<strong>"CSI: Miami," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Out of the three (!) "CSI" programs on the air, "CSI: Miami" is the one to say goodbye first. The one-time ratings giant has been affected by football overruns (just as "The Good Wife" has) and "CSI: NY" has the edge in terms of total viewers, meaning a "Miami" sunset was inevitable. <br />

  • "CSI: NY"

<strong>"CSI: NY," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Of the two "CSI" spinoffs, "CSI: NY" is the stronger -- pulling in more than 10 million viewers on a Friday night is no easy task -- and with "CSI: Miami" canceled, "CSI: NY's" renewal was a no-brainer.

  • "The Good Wife"

<strong>"The Good Wife," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This critical darling suffered after its move from Tuesdays to Sundays thanks to sports overruns. The viewers are frustrated, but given its strong cast and Emmy love, the show is still coming back for more.

  • "Hawaii Five-0"

    <strong>"Hawaii Five-0," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Despite the scheduling setback as Alex O'Loughlin seeks treatment, Season 2 is still doing well for CBS in a very competitive timeslot.<br />

  • "How To Be a Gentleman"

<strong>"How To Be A Gentleman," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Not even having "The Big Bang Theory" as a lead-in could save this David Hornsby project, which only lasted three episodes.

  • "How I Met Your Mother"

<strong>"How I Met Your Mother," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> CBS renewed "How I Met Your Mother" for two more seasons in March 2011, so fans can look forward to being strung along about the titular mother's identity for a bit longer.<br />

  • "The Mentalist"

<strong>"The Mentalist," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Although the show hit a season ratings low in the middle of February, its fanbase and overall ratings were enough to have it return for another season.

  • "Mike & Molly"

<strong>"Mike & Molly," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Thanks to an Emmy win and Oscar nomination, Melissa McCarthy is a Hollywood power player and CBS is keen to keep her around. Just look at the multiple pilots she has in the works as a behind the scenes player! "Mike & Molly" will be back for a third season.

  • "NCIS"

<strong>"NCIS," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The long-running procedural has become a ratings juggernaut at a time when most shows start shedding viewers. Season 10 is now happening.

  • "NCIS: Los Angeles"

<strong>"NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show has gone up in the ratings over the last couple of years, and people can't get enough of L.L. Cool J and Chris O'Donnell.

  • "NYC 22"

<strong>"NYC 22," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This "Rookie Blue" clone from executive producer Robert DeNiro didn't really move the needle when it premiered midseason; CBS officially axed it with three episodes left to air.

  • "Person of Interest"

<strong>"Person of Interest," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> With ratings matching juggernauts like "Grey's Anatomy" and fans popping up everywhere, we'll be seeing another season of "Person of Interest."

  • "Rob"

<strong>"Rob," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Canceled<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> "Rob's" spot after ratings juggernaut "The Big Bang Theory" probably went a long way in helping it survive to see the end of its first season, but that's as far as it'll get.

  • "Rules of Engagement"

<strong>"Rules of Engagement," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> This show has moved around so much it's hard to remember when it's on, and with six seasons under its belt it's had quite a nice run. Despite slipping ratings and the aforementioned constant switcheroos, there's still a future for "Rules of Engagement."

  • "Survivor"

<strong>"Survivor," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status: </strong>Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Of <em>course</em> we have "Survivor" coming back for another season. Where else are we going to see petty squabbles and insane behavior on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world?

  • "Two and a Half Men"

<strong>"Two and a Half Men," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> Despite a less-than-favorable critical response, the revamped "Two and a Half Men" keeps pulling in respectable numbers every week. Ashton Kutcher, Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones will all return for a Season 10.

  • "Undercover Boss"

<strong>"Undercover Boss," CBS</strong><br /> <strong>Status:</strong> Renewed<br /> <strong>Why:</strong> The inherent addictiveness of this show has gone a long way in securing loyal viewers -- it has been on top of the ratings several times this season alone.
